Monty's Star:

Without a win since New Year’s Eve in 2023, backing Monty’s Star to win the Grand National feels like a bit of a stretch but placing certainly appears something worth exploring.

Recently, form has been indifferent at best. A lacklustre outing in the Newbury Gold Cup to open his 25/26 campaign was an inauspicious start. Ending up 14th of 24 was certainly nothing to write home about and the fact it was his first race without Rachael Blackmore on board since March of 2023 shouldn’t be overlooked.

Next time out was a bit better over the Irish Sea at Leopardstown in the Grade 1 Savills Chase. Finishing 5th of 10 isn’t great but it was a pack of good-looking horses ahead of him with Affordable Fury, I Am Maximus, Galopin Des Champs and Grangeclare West ending up in the top four spots.

Last time out it was sixthplace in the Irish Gold Cup and once more the quality of the field was impressive. But again, he left no real impression coming to the line and didn’t have that extra kick needed.

Monty’s Star has been a multiple-time runner up in Grade 1 company but has struggled to kick on to be in the mix at the top level in the past couple of years. With no Blackmore on his back, that wildcard has been removed. Each-way is the only way to bet here and betting on the nose would be a real long shot.
