High Class Hero:

If we only looked at the raw results without any context, you’d immediately shy away from backing High Class Hero for the feature at Aintree this Saturday.

Twice he’s taken to the track in the calendar year and on both occasions he failed to reach the finish, being pulled up without making any impression on either occasion. That alone should concern punters.

The conditions were not great for either race but he has won in the not-too-distant past on similar soft ground. At Punchestown in February last year, he was short odds-on and performed as expected staying on extremely well and won comfortably.

Next time out was an interesting race as he went off as short as 2/13 but failed to win. On that day he made mistakes at three of the final four fences, which is always going to hamper your chances. Despite this, he was still less than three-quarters-of-a-length behind the eventual winner Common Practice.

Punters, however, weren’t put off as he was the 10/3 favourite for the Class 1 Sandown Park Gold Cup and, despite no winning, it wasn’t a poor performance as he came home third ahead of Spanish Harlem and Grangeclare West - both of whom are heavily fancied for the Grand National on Saturday.

Trainer Willie Mullins said that performance reminded him of Nick Rockett’s a year ago and we all remember what he did at Aintree in 2025.

Strange one to pick, as on paper his recent runs have been less than stellar but the trainer really likes him and, for that reason alone, you can’t rule him out entirely. Tough to back on the nose but each-way is viable.
