Another stable that was awaiting some scratches was that of Ben Pauling but he got the good news early in the week that a third horse had been taken out of consideration for the race, opening the door for his 11-year-old Twig to get the nod.

A year ago, Twig headed to Aintree for the Grand National but just never got into the race, finishing a creditable tenth as a 50/1 shot. What he did do however was use that experience and parlayed it into a more than impressive victory in December when he defeated a good field in the Class 1 Becher over the same fences.

At 18/1, he wasn’t expected to make much of an impact that day but showed great staying power and determination, going toe-to-toe with Mr Vango that afternoon as the two of them went clear and gave a great account of themselves, slugging it out over the final three fences before Twig got the win by a short head on the line.

Back in 2024, he went to the Cheltenham Festival and finished second as a 28/1 shot in the Ultima. He was comfortably beaten by Chianto Classico that day but beat some very good horses into second.

One thing we’ve consistently seen is that he gamely holds on towards the end, he may not have the greatest top-end speed but he has plenty of guts and that counts for a lot when asking a horse to go over four miles in the Grand National.

He won plenty of races earlier in his career and has seemingly enjoyed a bit of a second wind this season. I would fully expect him to go off in the 66/1 - 80/1 bracket and if you love a horse who tries and has a win over these fences, you’ll feel an each-way shot and a top six finish isn’t the worst bet in the world.
