Mr Vango:

Heading into Grand National week, there was one thing that Mr Vango’s trainer was looking at on a regular basis - and that was her weather app. She had made it clear that the ground needed to be good to soft as they weren’t interested in running him on a firmer course.

Luckily for her (and as a north-west resident myself), I can attest to the rain that seems to have fallen with quite some regularity over the past few weeks, and conditions will be near-enough exactly what they were hoping for.

It has been a stop-start season for this 10-year-old as he’s been pulled up twice this year. He had an abscess under a corn that hampered him in the Eider Chase, a race which he was leading before tailing off. Similar was true at Sandown, where the horse led before the jockey called time on his race with three to go. So speed and jumping prowess have been shown, but the finishing ability less so.

Before those two runs, though, he was on a four-race top-two finish streak including, importantly, at Aintree for the Becher Handicap before Christmas where he was beaten by a short head but showed plenty coming down the stretch to the line.

Before that it was three-straight victories. So there is plenty to like here if you can look past being pulled up twice in a row this year. Those two premature endings have seen his price drift dramatically, so he’s now an each-way play who’ll be very popular.
