This race comes against the backdrop of some big chances for owner JP McManus for the upcoming season. Having served as his retained and top jockey for five years since the retirement of Barry Geraghty, Mark Walsh has been unceremoniously replaced by Harry Cobden despite being the most decorated person ever to wear the famous green and gold bands.

Yet despite this announcement in January, Walsh is still in his role and therefore gets first pick of who he wants to ride for the Grand National. And his decision was this horse, Jagwar.

That shows an awful lot of faith in this seven-year-old and he’ll want to end his longstanding partnership on a high by proving that dumping him was a dumb move. The 40-year-old has yet to win the Grand National and this might well be his best chance to break that duck - and what a time it would be to do such a thing.

Back at the 2025 Festival, Jagwar announced himself with a good win in the Plate Handicap and went back this year only to be beaten by half-a-length in the Ultima, with Johnnywho besting him that day. Looking at his results, though, seems to be secondary to watching what Mark Walsh did.

He had the choice of 2024 winner I Am Maximus, last year’s favourite Iroko and Jagwar. The jockey has made his decision and feels that the latter is in the best condition and has the best chance. That says a lot more than I or most tipsters/commentators could. Undoubtedly a contender.
