A bit of a behind-the-curtains look here, as the last profile I wrote was that of Lecky Watson. I could just copy and paste large chunks of it to Champ Kiely as the two of them have some real similarities heading into the Grand National this weekend.

Both have impressed mightily in the past but have just not got going in the 25/26 Jumps Season.

Opening up in a Grade 3 at Naas, a solid run saw Champ Kiely finish second by a short head but that was the best we’ve seen from him so far this term.

In the Grade 1 Savills Chase, he was very much in contention before clipping his heels and slipping. That could be seen as a touch unlucky but when he came out as the 2/1 joint-favourite in the New Year’s Day Chase at Tramore and finished more than 30 lengths behind the eventual winner, eyebrows must be raised.

Last time out it was the Irish Gold Cup and, of the finishers, only Grangeclare West trailed Champ Kiely and he tailed off late. It was another disappointing performance and there are plenty of question marks. Yet Willie Mullins is a mighty fine trainer and if anyone can get him turned round and into good shape for the Grand National, then he’s most definitely the man.

Still feels like a long shot, however.
