Top Of The Bill:

Top Of The Bill is a good solid handicap chaser but asking him to step up in this sort of class feels like a bridge too far for the 10-year-old.

He has won plenty of races but never in the top tier when it comes to company. Twice last year he came home first, but when you look at who was entered in the race none jump out as a good notch on the belt as it were.

A very creditable second place in a Grand National Trial race last time out at Haydock Park as the rank outsider is probably his best performance to date. Even then, had he jumped exceptionally well, he may have won. Instead, he was awkward on a couple of fences and made a really poor mistake at the 18th, yet still finished less than two lengths behind the winner and gained nearly 10 lengths on the jumps.

Once more, though, you don’t look at that field and see anyone you think is a class act bar maybe Monbeg Genius, who finished third in the Ultima at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival but hasn’t done much of note in the past couple of years.

Top Of The Bill is the epitome of a solid horse who every so often will run way beyond their means. Could it happen again on Saturday? Sure. Is it likely to happen? No, not really. Ranked as an outsider for a reason.
