Gorgeous Tom:

Gorgeous Tom has been there or thereabouts in decent company across the past two years but hasn’t tasted glory since early November 2024.

What you can ascertain is that he often runs exactly to expectations. At the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, he was priced-up as the fourth-favourite in the Brown Advisory and finished in exactly that position. He was always in touch with the leaders until four out when the top horses started to pull away.

Next up, it was back across to Ireland for a Novice Chase at Punchestown where once more he was priced-up as the fourth choice in the betting and you’ll never guess where he finished. Well, actually you can, he finished fourth.

This season he opened at Down Royal in a Grade 2 as the second choice in the betting. I don’t need to tell you where he ended up, you already know.

The only time he’s really bucked that trend across his past five starts is last time out as the 5/1 joint-favourite in a Class 1 at Leopardstown. It was the first time punters were really expecting him to perform at the pointy end of the race and he fell short, finishing fifth having tracked the leaders early before falling away with two to go.

So in recent times he’s yet to outperform his odds, and considering he’s unlikely to be in the top six in the betting, the chance of a place doesn’t feel great. But Henry de Bromhead should never be discounted as a trainer. Never.

Having said that, he won’t be one of my top choices.
