Three Card Brag:

Heading to Fairyhouse and the Grade 1 Bobbyjo, Three Card Brag came in as the slight favourite at 3/1 from Grangeclare West. There were plenty of reasons to believe that this Gordon Elliott-trained horse was set for a big performance.

Opening the season at Listowel, it was only Spanish Harlem who outperformed this nine-year-old, and he’s another genuine Grand National contender.

He showed at Cheltenham back in October that he jumps well and had the stamina coming to the line as he bested an 18-strong field in a Class 2, beating Backmersackme by two-and-three-quarter lengths.

Following that, it was second place as a 25/1 shot in the Newbury Gold Cup. Panic Attack may have strode away to win fairly handily but Three Card Brag did beat some really good horses to finish runner-up.

So then it was the Bobbyjo, all signs pointed towards a strong performance and then on to Aintree as one of the favourites. That, of course, didn’t happen and he never got into the top three at any point in the race. He weakened two out before a mistake and would finish seventh of the eight finishers.

Victory would’ve been a springboard towards potential Grand National glory, but maybe that poor run means he’s undervalued by the market and is a sound each-way bet at long odds.
