There was significant talk that Firefox would swerve the Aintree Grand National and would instead race in the Topham Chase instead. But he’s going for the glory despite struggling mightily in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last month.

Finishing a distant sixth, it was certainly not the run of a horse you’d expect less than 30 days later could turn it all around and compete in the most famous race in the UK.

His pedigree, though, is more than solid. We’ve seen him place at the Cheltenham Festival before when he finished third in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle back in 2024. We saw him jump well that day and he had good speed but got blocked in with two to go and struggled to break out, allowing Slade Steel and Mystical Power to get away.

Twice he’s been runner-up in Grade 1 fields at Aintree and Punchestown. The performance at this course was back in 2024 in the Top Novices’ Hurdle when the aforementioned Mystical Power beat him by half-a-length.

Most punters, though, will look at his run at the Irish Gold Cup as a genuine sign of optimism. Finishing fourth doesn’t look great on paper but the only horses to beat him that day were all winners of big races at the Cheltenham Festival, with Fact to File, Gaelie Warrior and Galopin Des Champs all besting him. The fifth-placed horse? Well that was none other than Grand National winner I Am Maximus. That is some really good company and to finish fourth as a 33/1 shot is really a feather in his cap.

Winning the 2026 Grand National would be quite something but a place at a big price is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility.
