Lucky 15 Tips: Value at York suggests each-way play

Friday's racing set-up wouldn't look out of place on Saturday. Absolutely fantastic tracks are in operation at 'home,' and Ireland has Gowran and Fairyhouse to add to the mix.

We're off to York, the verdant acres of the Knavesmire, for our Lucky 15 tips. It's my favourite racecourse on the planet, and if I had a pound for the number of times I've visited down the years I'd definitely consider acquiring a 98" telly for the World Cup/Royal Ascot next week. Dream on ...

Horse Racing Odds

York 15:00 - Beaujolais Nouveau @ 6/1

6f fillies' Class 2 handicap, for three-year-olds and upwards.

Typically tricky York dash, with great value to be had if you've got a view. I'm concerned that my selection is carrying second-top weight (9st 11lb), but she's in such good heart that I'm siding with her anyway.

Beaujolais Nouveau is a four-year-old daughter of a G1-winning sprinter with some stamina influence on the dam's side too. It's no surprise then that she's equally at home at 7f, and that versatility is always a plus for me.

Last time at Ripon she sluiced up in a Class 3, forging clear late in the piece for a 2.25l success. The assessor has had his/her say, and a 7lb hike will complicate matters.

But that ability to finish powerfully, and the upwardly-mobile nature of the last success gives me confidence that she can really serve it up to her rivals on Friday.

Ben Haslam trains, and regular recent pilot Andrew Mullen has the riding assignment.

York 15:35 - Big Negotiator @ 1/1

Fillies once again take centre stage, this time two-year-olds in a restricted novice at the minimum 5f trip.

I'm taken with Irish raider Big Negotiator, trained by Paddy Twomey in County Tipperary. She's run twice so far, at Navan and Listowel, and shown plenty of ability in finishing third and second respectively, just 1.25l and then 0.5l adrift.

The great Billy Lee was in the plate on both occasions but he's not making the trip across the sea as I understand it, and local star turn PJ McDonald has the mount. Looks like Billy's got his hands full himself at Fairyhouse on Friday with a ride in all EIGHT races, including one for Twomey.

Our pick showed plenty of improvement between those runs and might be taking a look at York's contours with a view to returning for the Ebor meeting in August perhaps (when I suspect Mr Lee would be on board)!

She's in the Queen Mary at the Royal meeting, too, but that would be a very swift turnaround. Could be smart ...

York 16:10 - City Of Delight @ 9/1

Class 2 handicap over 10.5f, for older horses.

Big field for this, over the classic York Dante and Juddmonte International distance. More great value as a consequence, and the one I'm getting behind is David Menuisier's City Of Delight.

He's a five-year-old gelding by a top-class GI American miler, and has won six of his 21 starts. Last time out at Goodwood he was 6l adrift of the red-hot Yabher, who is surely a Listed-class animal lurking in handicaps and is now rated 104.

City Of Delight's rating is unchanged at 90, and his first visit to the Knavesmire could be a happy and fruitful one. The brilliant Brazilian Silvestre De Sousa takes the mount, for the first time.

York 17:18 - Beach Point @ 14/1

Same 10.5f trip for older horses, Class 4 handicappers this time.

Another big field, and luck in running is almost as important as form in these affairs. My pick is a consistent type of William Knight's, a five -year-old Blue Point gelding - Beach Point.

Respectable four-from-29 career tally so far, and is just a pound above his last winning mark. This will be his fourth run after reappearing for the 2026 season and so far he's been beaten just 2l, 2l and 3l.

Bang on the premises then, and some talented jocks have been booked to do the steering throughout his career - Oisin Murphy, Cieren Fallon, Hector Crouch and James Doyle among them.

He's got a tidy draw in the six box and can make his presence felt, fingers crossed. Some nice prices among our fancies, so I'm suggesting an each-way tickle on Friday afternoon.

If you're visiting, kindly say hello to that magnificent racecourse for me. Insert famous A Schwarzenegger quote, and dream of Ebor days ...

If all four of our selections won, today's notional 25p each-way Lucky 15, at the prices indicated (they can of course fluctuate), would return around £1,092 for a £7.50 total stake. If you can improve upon our selections (of course you can) - then go for it!
