Quai De Bourbon:

It says a lot about punters' trust in the legendary trainer that Quai De Bourbon is firmly in the middle-to-upper level in the Grand National Betting Market. Since finishing third in the Irish edition of this race 12 months ago, it has just not worked out for this seven-year-old French horse. Yet punters still haven’t been turned off completely.

Before that good run over at Fairyhouse, he’d unseated his rider in the Brown Advisory at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival. In a small field of seven, he was one of the longer shots but it was actually the two outside of him in the betting who contested for the win, whilst he was always towards the rear before making a mistake and sending Patrick Mullins to the turf.

A quick turnaround saw him pointed in the Mildmay at the Aintree Festival but on this occasion he was brought down. When he was taken out of the race, though, it wasn’t at the front of the field competing, it was once more towards the back of the pack.

Punters, though, were still not put off and when we next saw him, to open up his 25/26 Jumps Season campaign, he went off as the 3/1 favourite in a Grade 3 over at Navan. Yet again he would disappoint, being pulled up with three to go and essentially his race was over five out when he was clearly starting to run out of gas.

His odds drifted for the Thyestes at Gowran Park but he was still in the group behind 7/2 favourite Captain Cody when they came to post. In a shock to nobody reading this and seeing what he’s been doing, once more his jockey called time, pulling him up before the last having made a mistake at the previous fence when already down in seventh.

A creditable third last time out came at just two-and-a-half miles and, even then, he showed nothing extra towards the end, raising questions about how he’ll do going north of four miles on Saturday.

With Willie Mullins, you just never know. But nothing in the past year outside of that third-place finish in the Irish Grand National has been a remotely positive indicator that he’s got a chance on Saturday. Yet money still comes in for Quai De Bourbon and punters aren’t ignoring his chances.
