It was an anxious wait for trainers Jonjo & A J O’Neill as they sat just outside the cut-off point for entry into the Grand National but the good news came at the start of the week. And suddenly, from being on the outside looking in, they had a genuine live contender who was sitting in the top five of the betting market.

Part of the reason he’s so well-fancied is that he arrives at Aintree on the back of victory at the Cheltenham Festival. This nine-year-old went to the Ultima expecting to be in the middle-of-the-pack but he beat Jagwar down the stretch in a thrilling run to the line in what was his first start after a wind operation.

Those in the know say that often it is the second start after such a procedure that produces the best results. If so, then watch out as this horse can genuinely be in the mix.

Previously, he’s been a frustrating horse as he seemed to have plenty but was never able to put it together.

Beaten by a neck in the Kim Muir last year when going off as the 9/2 favourite was by no means a disaster, but following that up with a disappointing showing in the Irish Grand National was certainly not what the doctor ordered. The ground wasn’t great (Soft to Heavy) but more was expected than a fifth-place finish with no impression as the horses came towards the business end of the race.

On the plus side, despite a poor 25/26 season before that Ultima triumph, he has a great mark with only 10st 4lbs and has beaten one of the favourites for the Grand National head-to-head when the lights are shining brightest down at the Cheltenham Festival. Surprised he’s as short as he is, but if he does take a step forward from the Ultima - as often happens in that second race after a wind operation - he has every chance.
