Iroko:

Sometimes it just isn’t your day and that is the same for us humans as it is for horses. Iroko’s trainers believe that was the case last time out for this horse, who disappointed in the Ultima and finished 10th despite being fully expected to be at the sharp end of the race.

Speaking to Sky Sports Racing after the race, Greenall said: ‘'With Iroko it was probably just a combination of the track and the ground, probably just run off his feet and maybe not quite on song, but he was absolutely fine afterwards."

That should be a relief to all fans of this horse as he very much should be considered a genuine contender for Saturday’s Grand National.

Before that discouraging performance, he’d beaten odds-on favourite Firefox in a tiny three-horse field at Ascot and was then only beaten by the quite brilliant The Jukebox Man at Haydock Park. That is a solid resume for the 25/26 season.

In the 24/25 campaign, there were plenty of second places in good company including at the Aintree Grand National in the Mildmay and in a Graduation Chase at Haydock Park.

It was back in 2023 at the Cheltenham Festival that he first shone to the wider public with victory in the Martin Pipe. There is a tremendous horse here and he should be considered every bit the contender. I fully expect plenty of tipsters to be putting him up.
