Before that win in the Bobbyjo, Grangeclare West was 20/1 to win the Grand National on the AntePost betting market, yet that win saw the traders halve his odds and, as of the time of writing, he’s the joint-second favourite and will undoubtedly still be right up there in the betting when the races gets underway on Saturday at 16:00.

It isn’t just the win last time out in the Bobbyjo that should get punters excited about his chances. Last year as a 33/1 shot in the Grand National, a mistake at the last saw him overtaken to finish third.

That was a real chance to win and, as Grangeclare West cleared the last with no problems, the race was there to be won. It did result in a Willie Mullins’ 1-2-3, so I’m sure the legendary trainer wasn’t too upset, but it was an opportunity that slipped through the hands of jockey Brian Hayes.

Since that day in April 2025, it has been a solid campaign with the rust getting knocked off at John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase before a good performance in the Savills Chase saw him finish fourth but showing no signs of a lack of stamina towards the end.

The Irish Gold Cup may not have gone well but when you win the Bobbyjo, it makes everyone talk and he is very much a legitimate contender.
