Since falling in a Cross Country Handicap at Cheltenham whilst chasing the leaders before Christmas, it has been all upside for Favori De Champdou.

In a Class 1 over at Leopardstown, he came home to win at a huge 66/1 price for trainer Gordon Elliott and jockey Sam Ewing. It was a fine run on Yielding ground that got plenty to sit up and take notice.

Less than a month on, punters weren’t so weary but still he would be 9/1 for a Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham. Yet again it was a huge win, this time by eight-and-a-half lengths and suddenly this was a horse that had piqued the interest of the Horse Racing community.

He would head to the Cheltenham Festival as the 2/1 favourite for the Cross Country, and even though he was beaten by a wonderful performance from Final Orders, he still looked good himself and kept on well heading to the line. Sometimes you just get beaten by a better horse on the day and this is what I think happened here.

Good form is a tick. An excellent trainer is a tick. There is a lot to like here at a decent price. The major downside is his 25/26 season has been by far his best at the age of 11 but maybe everything has just come together later in his career. Either an each-way play or even backing him on the nose isn’t a crazy notion.
