This Willie Mullins-trained horse has struggled mightily in the past 12 months, but last April he was soaring to victory in the Scottish Grand National. Only eight completed the course that day at Ayr and it was Captain Cody who led the way home in a time of 8m 20.56s. It was a good performance with only one obvious mistake over the 27 fences.

It was the culmination of a really solid campaign, with the only clear disappointment coming at the Cheltenham Festival where he unseated his rider in the National Hunt Chase.

This time around though, it has been anything but. He would open in a Grade 1 Novice Chase at Fairyhouse and pretty much ran to expectations by finishing third in a six-horse field. But when going to Leopardstown as a 9/1 shot in a high-class Class 1, he would just make no impression on the leaders and didn’t show any real turn of speed coming off the last, ending up placing seventh.

That wasn’t a disaster by any means but it wasn’t as good as many had expected/hoped. The Thyestes at Gowran Park gave him every opportunity to bounce back and at least compete towards the front of the race but he fell as the clear 7/2 favourite at the fifth. But even at that point, he was towards the back of the field.

Last time out it was fifth place at the Bobbyjo and plenty of top Grand National contenders beat him that afternoon.

Clearly, there is a good horse in there. But so far this term he’s failed to produce anything above an average performance. He needs to step it up a gear or two even to get in the mix for the Grand National, but there is plenty of money saying that he could do that. Personally, I’m dubious.
