So despite the likelihood seemingly being rather slim just a couple of days ago, Amirite has been added to the Grand National field right at the last moment but unlike some of the other horses that snuck in over the first few days, this one feels like a genuine longshot.

This ten-year-old hasn’t even been sent to the Cheltenham Festival once in his career. That alone isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement of his chances. Practically every horse that takes on the Grand National has at least tried their hand down at the Festival on at least one occasion.

The biggest race of his career was arguably here at Aintree a year ago when he actually performed well-enough, finishing fourth in the Class 1 Topham and stayed pretty well, despite losing third in the final strides. That wasn’t a poor performance at all but that race was only just over the two-and-a-half mile mark and he’ll be asked to go Four plus on Saturday, that is a big difference.

We’ve only seen him once this calendar year, when he was pulled up in the Jimmy Neville and Aine Hurst Memorial Hurdle over at Thurles. He was leading early but weakened sharply before being pulled up with two to go when last.

Before that, he was at Cheltenham (but not for the Festival) and went off at a relatively short price of 8/1 for the Glenfarclas Crystal Cup Cross Country Handicap Chase but would be the final finisher, down in 12th and a total of 26 lengths behind 11th place, not the winner, 11th place. That is not the form of a Grand National contender.

One of the few horses where I genuinely believe is a complete no hoper in terms of placing. Going to tough to back him and he’ll go off at 80/1 or longer. It would not shock me if you can back him at 100/1 at some point between now and the race starting.
