So he’s in the race. The first reserve always knew there was a chance Spillane’s Tower (who was cross-declared) would go in the Bowl on Thursday, thereby relinquishing his place in the field to Pied Piper. Having a second horse drop-out at this late stage though seemed like a longshot.

News however came on Thursday morning that 2025 winner Nick Rockett would not be able to defend his crown and Imperial Saint would step in to become the 34th runner in the race this Saturday.

As for his chances? Well, he went to Aintree last year the Festival and was the 11/4 favourite in the Freebooter Handicap Chase. It wasn’t to be glory however as Cruz Control was very much in that mode after the last, besting Imperial Saint by five lengths to cruise to victory.

He does however have a win at the Liverpool track, having won comfortably on Boxing Day back in 2024 and twice more earlier that year. So if you are a punter who likes course history, he’s finished first three times and second from four races.

Last time out he came home in the middle-of-the-pack at the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival without ever making any real impact towards the front of the field. Before that he’d looked good in a win in the Peter Marsh at Haydock Park. He’d opened at a massive 33/1 in that race before going off at 7/2, it showed just what people thought of him and he justified their belief.

No doubt he’ll have his supporters on Saturday for the Grand National and they’ll be worse picks in the midfield of the betting market. A win would seem overly optimistic but a top six finish and an each-way payout is not beyond the realms of possibility.
