In the past two years, the winner of the Bobbyjo has headed across the Irish Sea and won the Aintree Grand National. I Am Maximus and Nick Rockett have shown that it is a great indicator that a good run in the most famous horse race can follow.

Punters have noticed, and Grangeclare West has shot in and is now at the forefront of the betting market having been at 40/1 in the AntePost before that victory in the Bobbyjo.

It should be noted that on that day both the winner and second-placed Gerri Colombe were running lighter, with Stellar Story giving eight lbs to both horses. That should not be overlooked and his run that day should be seen through that prism. With Grangeclare West carrying 11st 10lbs for the National and Stellar Story just 10st 11lbs, it will be fascinating to see how they’ll both run with such a turnaround in weights.

Before that run, Stellar Story disappointed at Punchestown in the Grade 1 Savills Chase, finishing just eighth albeit in a strong field.

Historically though, this is a good-looking horse. He won the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham back in 2024 and went back to the Festival a year later, finishing runner-up in the Brown Advisory.

He’s seen decent money on the AntePost having been at 50/1 earlier in the year but moving in to 25s after the Bobbyjo despite finishing third. Punters liked what they saw with the weight issues and, once he got a big cut from the handicapper, plenty moved. Will be well backed.
