The fact Walsh didn’t even consider continuing what had been a fruitful partnership with Perceval Legallois shouldn’t be considered as a death knell to his chances.

The jockey had plenty of options right at the top of the betting market, but when you consider this horse has only taken to the track twice this term, neither time showing much, you have to think his odds are considerably shorter than they could be.

Since that disappointing run at Aintree 12 months ago, he’s been pulled up in the Newbury Gold Cup when not remotely in contention and finished fourth in a Grade 3 at Tramore. Not anything to write home about, and certainly not the form of a horse who had been so fancied in big races earlier in his career.

Victory at Leopardstown as a 17/2 chance in a big-time handicap in December of 2024 was what many a Horse Racing fan had been waiting for from this horse. He led in the closing stages before pulling away and winning by a dominant seven lengths. That type of run came after he'd threatened to break through for a while.

Since that performance though, it has mostly been disappointments. The fact he’s not trading at a massive price shows that a significant number of gamblers are clinging on to the potential that he’s shown in dispatches. I’m not going to be one of them, however.

At the opening of the Betting Market at Midday on Thursday, the betting odds of Perceval Legallois to win the race were 33/1 but, as of publication, you can back this horse at 33/1 to win the 2026 Aintree Grand National. He was however as short as 25/1 early on Thursday morning after Harry Cobden was announced as the jockey.
