On the face of it, The Real Whacker wouldn’t even be remotely fancied to pull off the upset in Saturday’s Aintree Grand National. Our traders certainly don’t think he has a chance, listing him as one of the biggest outsiders in the field of 34.

Yet, trainer Patrick Neville still has high hopes that his 10-year-old can do something special. His whole 25/26 Jumps Season has been building up to this moment. He hasn’t raced since the first day of the calendar year in an attempt to keep him fresh.

On that occasion at Cheltenham, The Real Whacker would finish plumb last over hurdles going just over two-and-a-half miles at Cheltenham but one thing his lacklustre showings and lack of activity recently have helped with is his mark.

The Real Whacker was running on 12st just last autumn but will head to Aintree being asked to carry just 10st 7lbs, which is the lightest he’s been in his whole career. That shouldn’t be overlooked.

Nor should the fact that this is a former winner at the Cheltenham Festival, coming through as an 8/1 shot back in 2023 to win the Brown Advisory in a thrilling finish with Gerri Colombe - who has gone on to become one of the classiest jumpers around. Beating him on that day was no mean feat.

Recent form is not great, and he hasn’t won a race since November 2024. The last time we saw him in top-level company, he did ok in finishing fifth at the Cheltenham Gold Cup last year. But since then, it has been nothing to write home about and he’s come home last in his past two.

Maybe out of sight, out of mind has been the plan all along and his trainer has clearly circled this race, with the whole season dedicated to ensuring he’s at his physical peak for the Grand National. Jockey Gavin Sheehan gets the ride for the first time on this horse since 2022, which feels like a good booking.

He’ll go off at a massive price, but if you trust the trainer and the long-term vision then maybe he can place, at what will be a very nice number.
