Panic Attack:

Any time you win a race stacked with Grand National contenders in a Class 1, you are bound to attract plenty of attention. That is exactly what Panic Attack did back in November when she destroyed the field to win by six-and-a-half lengths in the Newbury Gold Cup. It was straight-up domination, she jumped well and galloped between the fences with aplomb. This was a class act from a classy horse who has been one of - if not the - revelation of the 25/26 Jumps Season.

That victory came on the back of smoking Vincenzo and others in a Class 1 at Cheltenham. Once again she didn’t seem to make a mistake over the jumps and had that rare combination of both speed and stamina.

Finishing third in the Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival may have been a disappointment but that race was only over two-and-a-half miles, and it has become clear that she yearns for a trip and wants to go further. In hindsight, owner Bryan Drew said that maybe they should’ve raced her in the Ultima instead but, either way, that result shouldn’t hinder her chances at all for the Grand National on Saturday.

She has consistently beaten the boys in top-class fields. She has regularly shown that she can jump all day and has both the speed and stamina to compete over four miles-plus.

Back in the day, I used to run a US Horse Racing website and I remember when Swiss Skydiver took on the boys and beat Kentucky Derby winner Authentic in a great duel down the stretch to take home the Preakness Stakes back in 2020. It was a great story and, in retrospect, she could have gone for the Kentucky Derby having qualified thanks to her second-place finish at the Blue Grass Stakes, where she was beaten despite going off as the 2/1 favourite by the very classy Art Collector.

It is always a great story when a Mare goes for it and this isn’t just some token run. Panic Attack is every bit the Grand National contender. I would not be shocked at all if, by post time, she goes off in the top five of the betting. A great jumper with good speed and stamina is a recipe for success over the fences at Aintree. She might very well be my top pick - not just for the story - but because of the cold hard numbers. The story is just an added bonus.

She has moved into joint-favourite status just before publication as money continues to come in for the Mare.
