Spanish Harlem:

Back in June, Spanish Harlem broke through and won the Jim Ryan Memorial Chase at Punchestown as a short-priced favourite and followed that up with another really strong performance in winning the Grade 3 Kerry National Handicap Chase at Listowel. All signs were pointing towards a horse that was really going places and had showed excellent staying power.

Then came a trip to Newbury for the Gold Cup there and he was pulled up without making an impression. That was disappointing but bad runs happen.

Next time out at Gowran Park for the Grade 3 Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase was when we saw both the good and the bad for this horse. He led all the way but jumped poorly, with two fences causing him trouble. Still, he kept the lead and was pulling away when another slight mistake at the last caused him to unseat his jockey. It was a victory that slipped through his fingers at a massive price.

It was a repeat of the Newbury Gold Cup in his last run with another lacklustre performance. The ground was heavy, which is a slight bit of mitigation, but in his past three races he’s been pulled up twice without being anywhere near the pointy end and then unseated his jockey when leading.

You just don’t know what you are going to get with Spanish Harlem. He could be bang average or he could be right up there. One of those long shots that interest each-way.
