When you win a Beginners Chase at Naas, follow it up with victory in a Grade 3 at Punchestown and then head on down to Cheltenham as a 20/1 shot and come away with the W, things are certainly trending in the right direction.

This is what happened with Lecky Watson last year as he went to the Festival and romped home by four lengths to win the Brown Advisory. He stayed on really well that day and all signs pointed towards a very good career. But since then it has all been downhill, some of it very rapidly.

He would follow that win up by heading back over the Irish Sea and lining up in a Novice Chase at Punchestown. Sadly though, he made a mistake at the first, made no impression and would fall at the fifth. It was a disappointing outing to end the campaign but there was plenty of optimism heading into the 25/26 season.

Results though have, shall we say, been less than stellar. Seventh in a strong and deep field in the John Durkan Memorial at Punchestown opened the season and this eight-year-old would follow that up with the same end result at Leopardstown in the Savills Chase. In both races he noticeably weakened in the final stages and that doesn’t bode well for the Grand National.

Lecky Watson was pulled up with two to go in the Irish Gold Cup when running at the back of the field before finishing plumb last in the Bobbyjo despite being prominent early.

If you like to back horses in form then best to give him a swerve. But if you like good horses who have struggled recently, therefore are getting a better mark weight-wise and are at bigger odds then he’s worth a tickle.
