If you make your Grand National Betting selection based on a story then we have one for you with the 10-year-old Beauport. His owner is Bryan Burrough, who back in 1983 became the youngest-ever owner of a winning horse in the race when Corbiere came in first.

Now, 43 years later, he’s back at Aintree looking for lightning to strike twice. On that day, his stead was fancied, going off at 13/1, but the odds are very different this time around and you are likely to be able to back Beauport at a triple-figure price.

Last year, he was 33/1 and was able to finish the race. He came home 12th and had been prominent, including leaving Valentines (the 25th fence) in the lead and leading with three to go. But he soon weakened and dropped down the field like a stone. That was an encouraging run but he was just asked to go half-a-mile too far.

It was a similar situation in his 25/26 season opener when he hit the lead with two to go in a Class 1 at Cheltenham before being overtaken by three horses after the last to end up in fourth place.

Last time out, yet again he led with two to go but was unable to finish the job and he would end up nearly 20 lengths behind the eventual winner Lud’or. There is clearly a really good horse here but asking him to go three miles feels like a bit of a stretch at this point in his career and the four-plus that the Grand National is run over just feels like an absolute long shot.
