In recent years, the Bobbyjo at Fairyhouse has been a really strong indicator of Grand National potential. Both I Am Maximus (2024) and Nick Rockett (2025) parlayed victory in this race to glory at Aintree. And while Answer To Kayf didn’t win this year, he put up a good enough showing that ruling him out completely seems like an unwise move.

As a 6/1 shot, he was the fourth-favourite and that is exactly where he placed. But what was encouraging was he never seemed to slow. Once jockey John Shinnick asked him to move forward he did just that. We didn’t see a great turn of speed or anything of the sort but, just by not slowing, he moved through the field despite being towards the back of the pack early.

When a horse is being asked to go a long way, just not slowing down noticeably towards the end of a race is a good sign.

Similar was true with his breakthrough victory late in 2025 when Answer To Kayf won well in the Troytown Handicap at Navan as an 11/1 shot. Once more it was a strong performance on Heavy ground and that gets us to arguably the most important thing for potential backers of this horse... watch the skies in the days leading up to the Grand National.

One thing his trainer wants more than anything ahead of Saturday’s Grand National is rain - and lots of it. He firmly believes that Answer To Kayf goes better on Heavy ground and despite a changeable forecast and plenty of scattered showers on the cards for the whole week up in the north west of England, prolonged rain doesn’t seem likely and that could be an issue.

Watering of the course resumed late last week following a relatively dry spell, with the course listed as Good to Soft, Good in Places as we headed into the week of the Aintree Festival.

If the rain doesn’t come and this race takes place in Good conditions then this horse could easily be scratched - and even if he isn’t, his chances will be far more remote than if the heavens open.
