After a postponement over the weekend, Preston North End will welcome Charlton Athletic to Deepdale at Tuesday night as the two-time FA Cup winners look to make it through to round four. League 1 Charlton will come to Lancashire looking to create a cup shock, with the Addicks unbeaten in their last five matches.

They’ll hope to keep that run of form going here, but we will see a winner on the night, given FA Cup replays have now been scrapped. Keep on reading to find out my Preston North End vs Charlton Athletic predictions featuring team news and betting tips.

Team News

With relegation now less of a threat, Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom will want to steer his side into the next round of this prestigious competition. I’d expect a handful of changes though from PNE with Jack Whatmough, David Cornell, Ryan Ledson and Josh Bowler all in need of starts.

Up top it will be interesting to see whether he sticks with Emil Riis Jakobsen and Will Keane, or gives Milutin Osmajic a chance from the start as he still has a lot to prove in a white shirt since his biting ban. They’ve one less option in that area of the pitch now as Jeppe Onkels has joined Aberdeen on loan, while Robbie Brady and Brad Potts remain out with long-term issues.

For Nathan Jones, his side are currently seven points off the play-offs in League 1, so he may choose to play a strong team here. The front two of Miles Leaburn and Tyreece Campbell could be rotated for Chuks Aneke and Matty Godden to try and provide a cutting edge after a 0-0 draw last time out.

Karoy Anderson and Allan Campbell could also come into the team to provide freshness in midfield and it will be interesting to see if Jones goes for a 4-2-3-1 or the 5-3-2 system he deployed last time out. Against a Championship outfit that also prefers a back five, he may choose to match them up.

Preston North End vs Charlton Athletic Odds

Preston are priced at 1/1 to win this game, giving them an implied win probability of 50%. That seems fair value against lower league opposition, as Charlton are priced at 11/4 to win the game in 90 minutes. A draw can be backed at 12/5, which would take the game to extra-time and then potentially a penalty shootout.

Over 2.5 goals is priced at 6/5 having come in during 42% of PNE’s league matches this term, while BTTS is 10/11. Preston’s three strikers, Keane, Evans and Osmajic are all available at 6/1 to score first in this cup tie.

Draw @ 12/5

I can’t separate these two so think there is value in backing a draw after 90 minutes. We know what we are going to get from a team managed by Jones, and they are in good form having only tasted defeat once in their last eight league matches. That has carried them up the table and into the third round of the cup, where I believe they can push Preston all the way.

They’ve got a reasonably solid defence, while Preston have drawn seven of their 14 home league matches so far. They are a pretty middling Championship outfit and I think if Charlton can be well-organised and structured, we could see a cagey affair that goes to extra-time. Good value in the draw for me.

I was going to pick out the unders goal markets as one to be considered, but given I think this is going to be a draw, I’m going to go one step further. A 0-0 really appeals to me here at a big price. Preston are sure to rotate slightly, but Heckingbottom’s teams are always functional, well-organised and difficult to break down.

Up against a Charlton side with the same characteristics I think we could see a stodgy game between two teams that prioritise defending and will likely line up with back fives. Charlton drew their last match 0-0 against Reading and have drawn three of their last six fixtures 0-0 as well. I think we could see another stalemate here after 90 minutes.
