Paris Saint-Germain powered to a third-straight Ligue 1 title - and their 10th in the last 12 seasons - earlier this year - and have been installed as heavy favourites to lift the trophy again next May.

However, the Parisians are reeling from the summer exit of star striker Kylian Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid to end one of the longest-running transfer sagas in recent memory. So, are the reigning champions in danger of losing their crown? I ponder that possibility below, where you can find the Ligue 1 winner odds 24/25.

Paris Saint-Germain @ 1/4

Luis Enrique led PSG to the Ligue 1 title in his first season in charge and the capital club have understandably been made big favourites to retain their crown, but the aforementioned exit of Mbappe, their top scorer for the past six seasons, lessens the certainty somewhat.

Mbappe was the club's leading light for so long and the exit of such an influential player is bound to affect them, but there were suggestions that his powerful presence may have held Luis Enrique's side back and that their spirit could be made stronger by his departure.

The Parisians have retained the rest of their stars and added 19-year-old Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves (Benfica - £51.3m), 22-year-old Ecuadorian defender Willian Pacho (Eintracht Frankfurt - £34.3m) and 25-year-old Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov (Krasnodar - £17.1m) to their ranks, so they look to be in good shape heading into the new campaign.

The question remains - who will replace Mbappe's goals? The France captain struck 27 times in Ligue 1 last term; PSG's second-highest scorer was Goncalo Ramos, who notched 11 times in his debut season at the club. Fellow big-money summer signing Randal Kolo Muani managed just six, so there is big pressure on the duo to boost their totals significantly this time around.

Without Mbappe, both should find it easier to hold down starting spots, while the likes of Vitinha, Marco Asensio, Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele should all be chipping in with goals to lessen the burden on Ramos and Kolo Muani.

It's a new-look PSG side, and while there is bound to be a degree of skepticism at the start, Mbappe's move to Spain may end up being advantageous as Luis Enrique looks to make the team his focus, relying less on individual brilliance.

Olympique Marseille @ 11/1

Arguably the biggest sleeping giant in French football, Marseille haven't tasted league title success since 2009/10, and Les Phoceens finished a lowly eighth last season to miss out on European football entirely - but could that be a blessing in disguise for the club?

The summer appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as head coach was a surprise to many who expected the recently departed Brighton & Hove Albion boss to rock up at an elite-level side, certainly one plying their trade in a European competition.

But the arrival of the Italian appears to have heralded the start of a new era for OM, who have made a big splash in the transfer market, bringing in Mason Greenwood (Manchester United - £22.3m), Ismael Kone (Watford - £10.3m), Bamo Meite (FC Lorient - £9m) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Tottenham Hotspur - loan).

There have been a host of high-profile exits to go along with those additions - last season's top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Al Qadisiya - £7.7m) has departed for Saudi Arabia while Ismaila Sarr (Crystal Palace - £12.9m) and Iliman Ndiaye (Everton - £15.4m) have returned to the Premier League - but there is a chance for De Zerbi to really stamp his personality on the club.

The absence of European football should work in Marseille's favour as it will give them more time to work on the training ground as they look to acclimatise to the tactician's methods. De Zerbi had an instant impact at Brighton in the 2022/23 campaign as he led the Seagulls to sixth place in the Premier League, thereby guaranteeing a spot in the Europa League group stage, and while events fizzled out last season, there is no doubting his coaching credentials.

A title tilt in his debut campaign in France is probably beyond OM, but who knows what can happen with a strong start and momentum behind them?

AS Monaco @ 14/1

Monaco last lifted the Ligue 1 title in 2016/17, a season where Mbappe, Radamel Falcao and Bernardo Silva, among others, starred for the principality club.

Les Rouge et Blanc lost many of their stars that summer and have been unable to replicate those feats since, but they did finish 'best of the rest' last season, nine points off champions PSG but six points ahead of third-placed Brest.

Monaco achieved second despite the big-money signing of Folarin Balogun failing to pay dividends as he struck just seven times in 29 league appearances. Much more will be expected of the 23-year-old USA international this season, particularly as last season's top scorer Wissam Ben Yedder has left for pastures new after five goal-laden campaigns in red and white.

Meanwhile, Malian midfielder Mohamed Camara has moved to Qatar to sign for Al-Sadd, leaving Monaco lighter in the middle of the park.

As ever, there is a real focus on youth at Monaco, who have signed 17-year-old George Ilenikhena (Royal Antwerp - £16m), 19-year-old Christian Mawissa (Toulouse - £13.7m) and 20-year-old Lamine Camara (Metz, £12.9m).

Finishing as runners-up again would represent a real achievement for the club, but their title chances look remote at best.

Olympique Lyonnais @ 18/1

The 2023/24 Ligue 1 campaign was at risk of being a disastrous one for Lyon, who found themselves propping up the French top flight in November. Laurent Blanc and Fabio Grosso were both dismissed as managers, and it wasn't until the appointment of Pierre Sage - initially as interim head coach - that Les Gones got back on track.

Get back on track they did, in spectacular fashion.

Lyon lost both league games in January but suffered just two defeats in their final 15 matches to secure sixth place and a berth in the Europa League group stage on the final day of the season. A busy summer transfer window has followed.

Ernest Nuamah, Oriel Mangala, Duje Caleta-Car, Mama Balde and Said Benrahma were all purchased permanently after spending time on loan at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, while Moussa Niakhate (Nottingham Forest - £27.3m), Georges Mikautadze (FC Metz, £15.8m) and Abner (Real Betis - £6.9m) are headline new arrivals. Argentine playmaker Thiago Almada will also join in January after a short-term stay with Brazilian sister club Botafogo.

Republic of Ireland centre-back Jake O'Brien left for Everton in a £16.7m deal but last season's top scorer Alexandre Lacazette remains contracted to the club despite reports of a potential move abroad.

Exciting times are on the horizon again for Lyon, but there's still a long way to go until they can compete for the Ligue 1 title, in my opinion. There's plenty of firepower in attack, but I don't think they are quite as strong at the back.

Lille OSC 33/1

The last club to stop PSG from winning Ligue 1 (in 2020/21), Lille finished fourth last season but saw their head coach Paulo Fonseca depart on June 5 before being appointed at AC Milan eight days later.

Ex-Lyon and Rennes boss Bruno Genesio has replaced the Portuguese tactician but the Frenchman's options have been depleted by the exit of central defender Leny Yoro to Manchester United, while Yusuf Yazici and Adam Ounas have left on frees.

Osame Sahraoui (Heerenveen - £6.9m), Aissa Mandi (Villarreal - free) and Thomas Meunier (Trabzonspor - free) have arrived at Stade Pierre-Mauroy but question marks remain around the future of star striker Jonathan David.

With or without David, a title charge looks highly unlikely for Lille.
