Match Preview:
El Clásico takes place on Sunday, exactly one year on from the corresponding fixture in La Liga last season. Barcelona won that game 4-0, but they'll be expecting a much tougher test this weekend as they return to the Santiago Bernabéu.
12 months ago, it was Hansi Flick who was preparing to lead a team into Spanish football's most important fixture for the first time. The German went on to oversee victories in all four Clásicos last term, with Barça rattling in 16 goals across the meetings, which included Supercopa and Copa del Rey finals.
This time around, it's Xabi Alonso who has a point to prove, as the Basque coach prepares for his first Clásico in the dugout. The Real Madrid boss featured in many as a player, so he's no stranger to the occasion, and he'll be hungry for a statement victory this weekend to show that Los Blancos are heading in the right direction under his leadership.
With 11 wins out of 12 matches in all competitions so far this season, that does appear to be the case. However, Alonso will need no reminding that his team has failed to show up for the two biggest tests of his reign so far.
He did his best to banish a 4-0 defeat to PSG at the Club World Cup as being part of a poor 2024/25 season for what was primarily Carlo Ancelotti's team. However, a 5-2 loss to Atlético in last month's Madrid derby was certainly his to own, with the ex-Bayer Leverkusen boss heavily criticised for rushing Jude Bellingham back from injury into the team, and changing the system to accommodate him.
Real Madrid's failings that day went deeper than that, but their response has been positive. They've largely bossed their matches since then, cruising past Kairat and Villarreal, although they've been less clinical over the past week, with only 1-0 wins against Getafe and Juventus.
Those two sides both set up in a very conservative fashion, but it'll be a different story on Sunday. Barcelona always take risks and look to play with a high line that can be both their greatest strength and their Achilles heel.
Last season in this fixture, it worked brilliantly. Kylian Mbappé was caught offside on no fewer than eight occasions, as Barça's defence held firm and their attack fired in a remarkable victory.
While Real Madrid were more competitive in the subsequent meetings, the Catalans still enjoyed periods when their opponents had no answer to Flick's high-risk, attacking football. Having scored four goals in the space of 31 minutes at the Bernabéu, they netted five times between the 22nd and 48th minutes in the Supercopa meeting in Saudi Arabia, and four goals in a 27-minute blitz in the most recent league meeting in May.
That can only give Barcelona belief heading into the first encounter of the 2025/26 season, although the circumstances this time around are very different.
With their injury problems mounting, Barça have not been convincing in recent weeks. They went into the international break following a 2-1 defeat to PSG and a humiliating 4-1 loss against Sevilla.
Since then, they've limped past struggling Girona 2-1 at home thanks to a 93rd-minute goal from emergency striker Ronald Araújo. There was a morale-boosting 6-1 victory over Olympiacos in midweek, but they were not great for large parts of that game either. The Greeks were competitive, before some questionable refereeing and a red card for their midfielder Santiago Hezze contributed to their downfall.
Team News:
Both clubs have been dealing with some significant injury problems in the weeks leading up to this game, but it's certainly Real Madrid who have managed to get more players back to fitness.
Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba are their only confirmed absentees. Dean Huijsen and Raúl Asencio are both expected to be available following their recent issues. Right-backs Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also back, although Fede Valverde is expected to continue in the role, with neither yet match-fit.
The biggest call for Alonso may be whether to start with Franco Mastantuono on the right flank, or be slightly more conservative and opt for an extra midfielder.
As for Barcelona, they are missing six players for El Clásico, with Marc-André ter Stegen, Joan García, Gavi, Raphinha, Dani Olmo, and Robert Lewandowski all sidelined with injuries. Jules Koundé is also a fitness concern after missing a couple of training sessions this week.
In better news for the visitors, Ferran Torres is fit again and may return to the starting lineup. However, Flick, who will serve a touchline ban on Sunday, could also opt to deploy Marcus Rashford as the striker once more.
Real Madrid vs Barcelona Predicted Lineups
- Real Madrid: Courtois, Valverde, Militao, Tchouameni, Carreras, Bellingham, Camavinga, Mastantuono, Guler, Vinicius Jr, Mbappe
- Barcelona: Szczesny, Kounde, Cubarsi, Garcia, Balde, Casado, De Jong, Pedri, Yamal, Rashford, Lopez
Match Odds:
Despite Barcelona's dominance of this fixture last season, Real Madrid are the 19/20 favourites to win on Sunday. You can back the Draw at 16/5, while the visitors are priced at 9/4.
Over 3.5 goals is priced at 8/11, and that bet has landed in each of the last six competitive meetings. If you're expecting another Clásico cracker, you can also back Both teams to score and Over 4.5 goals at 13/8.
Real Madrid are priced at 6/4 to score over 2.5 goals in the game, while you can back the hosts to score in both halves at 21/20. Barcelona are priced at 7/4 in the same market, while you can back the Catalans to win either half at 19/20.
Mbappé, who has scored 15 goals in 12 appearances for Los Blancos so far this term, leads the running in the goalscorer markets. He's priced at 3/1 to score first and 4/6 to score anytime.
You can back Lamine Yamal to get on the scoresheet at 13/8, while Vinícius Júnior is available at 5/4 to score anytime. There's also plenty of English interest in this match, with Rashford priced at 7/4 in the same market, while Bellingham can be backed to score anytime at 2/1.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona Stats
- Barcelona won both La Liga clashes last season - scoring eight goals in two games.
- Both Lamine Yamal and Raphinia scored in both games.
- Real Madrid sit top of La Liga, two points clear of Barcelona.
- Both teams are scoring at an average of more than two-per-game.
Bet 1 - Both teams to score 2 or more goals @ 13/8
This fixture invariably does live up to the hype, with goals galore in El Clásico over the past 18 months. All of the last three have seen both sides score at least twice, and there's reason to think that trend may continue.
Barcelona's defence is not looking at all convincing, with even some relatively limited opponents finding it quite easy to play straight through the centre of the pitch and create one-on-one opportunities. That's a big worry against an in-form Mbappé, who bounced back from his offside nightmare one year ago to score a hat-trick in the reverse fixture.
There's little chance of Flick changing his approach when it comes to the high line, so all the ingredients exist for this to be another entertaining affair. I'm backing Both teams to score 2 or more goals at 13/8.
Bet 2 - Fermín López 1+ shots on target & Jude Bellingham 1+ shots on target @ 7/4
Two attacking midfielders who have recently returned to fitness could have a big say in determining the outcome of this match.
Fermín López nailed down his place in the Barcelona lineup for Sunday by scoring a hat-trick against Olympiacos in midweek. The 22-year-old has really developed as a player over the past couple of years, and he's averaging 2.2 shots on target per 90 minutes in La Liga this term.
On the other side, Bellingham will be feeling sharper and more confident after clocking up some much needed minutes over the past week. The Englishman is starting to make more of his trademark runs from deep into the penalty area, and he's hit the target at least once in each of his last four appearances.
I can see both players threatening in this game, and I'm using the Bet Builder to back Fermín to have 1+ shots on target and Bellingham to have 1+ shots on target at 7/4.
