World Cup Final Odds: 12/5 Argentina value for final glory

The World Cup final looms large over Sunday and the biggest football game on the planet could well deliver another classic. Four years ago in Qatar, Argentina and France drew 3-3 in the final, before the South Americans won on penalties.

Spain vs Argentina Odds

Even though they are defending champions, Argentina are the underdogs for Sunday’s showpiece.

Spain are rated as 5/4 to win in the full-time match market with Betfred, while Argentina are 12/5, and the draw at the end of normal time available at 2/1.

Those prices are a reflection on Argentina’s somewhat fortuitous run to the final. Lionel Scaloni’s men needed extra-time to beat debutants Cape Verde 3-2 in the last 32, before going 2-0 down to Egypt in the last 16 in the second half, only to come storming back late on.

They also needed extra-time and the helping hand of Switzerland having a man sent off to get past Murat Yakin’s side in the quarter-finals, before also destroying England’s dream with two goals in the final 10 minutes in Wednesday’s memorable semi-final.

Spain, in contrast, have had a relatively serene run to the final. The European champions have seen off Austria, Portugal, Belgium and then the previously formidable France in the knockout stages without too many problems.

On tournament form, the prices are right but sometimes a team just has that extra bit of belief and spirit that seems to inspire them to go on and lift the trophy - and that is something Argentina have demonstrated in abundance so far.

Player Odds

Messi to score anytime, boosted to 7/4, stands out immediately in the goalscorer market.

The former Barcelona star may not have scored against England but he set both goals up as his side scored twice to break the Three Lions and he is surely going to have a say at the MetLife Stadium.

Messi also has the small matter of trying to win the Golden Boot. The veteran superstar has a joint-best eight goals so far and adding another on Sunday would help his cause in winning that personal accolade, depending on what his rivals did in the third-place play-off.

World Cup Odds

Elsewhere, Mikel Oyarzabal is tempting at 29/20 to find the net anytime again for Spain as he looks to add to his five goals for the tournament so far, while keep an eye on Arsenal’s Mikel Merino too.

Merino was La Roja’s hero when coming off the bench to nab the winner against both Portugal and Belgium and he is attractively-priced at 18/5 in the anytime scorer market.

A punt on the final still being level at 0-0 at half-time appeals at a price of 13/10.

Despite the attacking riches on show, it could be a cagey start in New York/New Jersey with both sides well aware of the other's quality and not being too keen to take many early chances.

That could lead to a level of respect being shown by both sides, and a slow tempo may feed into a more tactical affair, at least in the first 45 minutes.

Argentina’s game with England was 0-0 at the break, as was Spain’s last-16 tie with Portugal so both have shown patience when required in the tournament.
