The Carabao Cup gets going on Tuesday evening and we have a 161/1 four-team accumulator for you to have a think about. Four away wins all at Evens or above. Can this competition spring plenty of early drama…?

Football Accumulator Tips – Tuesday 8 August, 2023

  • Back Portsmouth to beat Forest Green Rovers at Evens
  • Back Salford to beat Preston North End at 10/3
  • Back Wigan Athletic to beat Wrexham at 11/4
  • Back Stockport County to beat Sheffield Wednesday at 4/1
  • Overall Fourfold – 161/1

The first game of this fourfold is putting my lot up once more and that is always tempting fate. Pompey do not have a good record in this competition but did surprise Cardiff on the road at this stage last season. The visitors won both league ties with Forest Green last season and John Mousinho will surely put out a strong side. Rovers lost on Saturday, going down 0-2 at home to Salford City despite having 19 attempts on goal, the problem was only four of which were on target. The League 1 side drew against Bristol Rovers despite creating the bulk of the good chances. I think Pompey win this.

Speaking of Salford, they have the relatively short-trip to Preston ahead of them and this is part of my ‘bigger team will put out their second XI and be shocked by lower opposition’ prognosis. Every year clubs in the Championship do this and pretend to be surprised that their backups aren’t up to scratch compared to the first teamers of lower opposition. Neil Wood’s side are one of those teams you look at and think could actually do some damage in this competition because they’ll actually care. Upset possibility.

Wrexham are odds-on to beat Wigan Athletic at home in the live Sky game and looking at what each side did at the weekend, it is fair to say that doesn’t make total sense. Unsurprisingly there was plenty of interest in the Welsh side going into the game but a 3-5 reversal at home to MK Dons showed that the step-up is not going to be straightforward although they won’t face teams who score five from their six attempts on target too often. Wigan shocked League 1 favourites Derby on the road. Manager Shaun Moloney looks a really good one and it would not shock me if he has his men well set up to win yet again on the road.

My final selection is the biggest price of the four and fits with my Preston vs Salford prognosis. I’m not entirely sure we’ll see many of the Owls first XI out there and despite an opening day defeat, County will be there or thereabouts in the latter stages of the League 2 season. This is one of those games where a surprise happens and afterwards you look back and think ‘I shoulda seen that coming.’

Big price this fourfold but it feels like a better shot than the 161/1 price available.
