Iberian neighbours Spain and Portugal do battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup as they meet for the fourth time at a major tournament. Spain eliminated their nearest neighbours 1-0 in the last 16 at the 2010 World Cup en route to lifting the trophy, while they claimed a penalty shootout win in a Euro 2012 semi-final, also on their way to tournament glory.

Their most recent World Cup meeting was in the group phase at Russia 2018, when Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw. They meet on Monday in Arlington, Texas (2pm local, 8pm BST), and below you can find the latest Spain vs Portugal Predicted Lineups & Team News.

Portugal

Portugal survived a major scare in their come-from-behind 2-1 win over Croatia, with Roberto Martinez's side aided by a dramatic VAR intervention at the death.

The Paris Saint-Germain pairing of Joao Neves and Vitinha was restored in midfield for that clash in Toronto, with Ruben Neves left out.

AC Milan's Rafael Leao was handed a first start out wide as Bernardo Silva is still used sparingly by Martinez.

Bruno Fernandes went off just after the hour-mark and the Manchester United playmaker is under fire after a slow start at the World Cup, though it seems unlikely Martinez will leave him out.

Ronaldo leads the line and scored from the penalty spot against Croatia - his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout game coming at the ninth attempt.

Spain

Luis de la Fuente's side are yet to concede a goal in four games and their opening stalemate against Cape Verde has to be viewed differently given how much of a scare the Blue Sharks gave Argentina in the last 32.

The European champions are unbeaten in 35 games, barring penalties, and are seemingly growing with every game in this tournament.

Dani Olmo returned to the starting XI against Austria with Mikel Merino losing out. Yeremy Pino (shoulder) and Nico Williams (adductor) have been carrying minor concerns and sat that game out while new Liverpool signing Victor Munoz (thigh) hasn't played a single minute so far.

With his defence purring, the back four of Pedro Porro and Marc Cucurella either side of Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte appears locked in ahead of Athletic Bilbao keeper Unai Simon.

Portugal vs Spain Key Players:

Nuno Mendes (Portugal)

Portugal will have to get many things right if they are to progress and Nuno Mendes will be detailed to keep tabs on Lamine Yamal.

They've clashed four times and the PSG full-back has been on the winning side three times, including the 2025 UEFA Nations League final that Portugal won on penalties.

It's a fascinating duel between two of the best young talents in world football and Yamal has publicly suggested Mendes has been the toughest opponent he's come up against.

Mendes will be a menace going forward when possible and created some excellent chances against Croatia but he also lost possession at crucial times.

Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)

Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal has established himself as the talisman of Spain's frontline.

His double against Austria took his tally to four goals and one assist in this tournament and he now has 24 goal contributions (scored 17, seven assists) in his last 16 starts for Spain and is oozing confidence in front of goal in a team creating lots of chances.
