Charlton vs Chelsea Prediction: Rosenior’s reign to start with a win

Liam Rosenior takes charge of his first Chelsea game on Saturday as they head to Charlton Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup (20:00 GMT, TNT Sports 1). Neither side is in great form heading into this, and so the Addicks may be sensing an opportunity to cause an upset at The Valley.

Team News

Kayne Ramsay and Onel Hernandez are both ruled out with hamstring injuries for Charlton, while Josh Edwards and Matty Godden are also in the medical bay with ankle and knee problems, respectively.

Miles Leaburn and Charlie Kelman are likely to continue as the Addicks' centre-forward pairing. Sonny Carey is their top scorer with five goals and will be hoping to feature in the middle of the park.

Football Odds

Marc Cucurella will serve a one-match ban for Chelsea after he was sent off in the midweek defeat to Fulham, while Levi Colwill (ACL), Romeo Lavia (thigh) and Dario Essugo (thigh) are injured for the Blues.

Jorrel Hato should come in for Cucurella on Saturday at left-back.

Charlton vs Chelsea Odds

Charlton are without a win in their last four games but they are 13/2 to pull off an upset inside 90 minutes.

Three of Chelsea's previous five fixtures have ended in a draw and the stalemate is valued at 18/5.

The Blues are the 2/5 favourites to prevail in regulation time.

Chelsea's talisman Cole Palmer is the favourite to score anytime at 21/20.

Match Result & BTTS - Chelsea & Yes @ 7/4

Chelsea's last win came in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals against Cardiff City. They have since gone five matches without a victory, and Rosenior will be determined to have an instant impact on Saturday, particularly with this being an FA Cup tie.

There is no doubt that there is a huge gulf in class between their squad and that of their Championship hosts. The Addicks can only dream of what Chelsea have spent on their squad in recent years.

Nathan Jones' side are winless in four games themselves, but knowing that Chelsea are in a similar position, the Welshman will no doubt be firing up his players for this clash.

I do see them posing problems for Chelsea, who have looked shaky at the back in recent weeks. The Blues should have enough firepower to make sure they emerge victorious; however, I can see the home team getting on the scoresheet as BTTS - Yes has struck in each of Chelsea's past six outings.

I'm therefore backing Chelsea and BTTS - Yes at 7/4, which has an implied probability of 36.4%.

Anytime Goalscorer - Liam Delap @ 23/20

Liam Delap's Chelsea career has not gotten off to a brilliant start, with just two goals in 15 appearances. However, I thought he looked bright when he came on to face former club Manchester City in last Sunday's 1-1 draw in the Premier League.

He carried the ball forward frequently and asked questions of the defenders. Of all the Chelsea players, I think he will be most pleased with Rosenior's appointment. After some disappointing loan spells in the Championship, Rosenior at Hull was able to get a tune out of the young striker.

Delap scored eight goals in 31 league appearances for the Tigers, which helped secure a move to Ipswich Town. Rosenior was able to get the best out of him a couple of years ago, and he should be able to replicate that with better players around the forward.

I think he's an attractive price to score on the new head coach's debut.
