Southampton have been installed as the favourties to gain promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs by Betfred, having secured a fourth-place finish with a 3-1 win at Preston North End on the final day.

Tonda Eckert’s men have been on an incredible run to break into the top six, and are now 19 league games unbeaten. Only a late Manchester City comeback at Wembley prevented them reaching the FA Cup final as well, and they will enter the play-offs with huge momentum and confidence.

They travel to Middlesbrough on Saturday lunchtime for the first leg of what should be a fascinating encounter. Two of the best footballing teams in the league on their day, Middlesbrough will want to reset having been in such a strong position to go up automatically in January.

The other semi-final sees Millwall, who won on the final day against Oxford, face surprise package Hull City. The Tigers managed to beat Norwich City at home, coming from one goal down thanks to an Oli McBurnie brace, and that was enough for a sixth-place finish after both Wrexham and Derby County failed to win their home games.

A pitch invasion at the MKM Stadium followed, but after a season of overachievement already, Hull are the big underdogs, priced at 9/2 to go all the way and get back to the Premier League. Millwall could provide value at 5/2, given that they finished third and look like a good tournament team.
