Southampton (A) to beat Preston @ 21/20
I’ve jumped two-footed into the final day of the Championship season, with all games starting at 12:30. We start by backing in-form Southampton to get the job done at Preston. On paper, this may seem slightly risky given the Saints can no longer secure a top-two spot, however, Tonday Eckert’s men still have plenty to play for.
They will want to finish third or fourth to get the benefit of that home leg in the play-offs second, while Preston are tepid opponents, having slipped away from the top six. They sit 12th, so I will back another away win at Deepdale.
Coventry (A) to beat Watford @ 1/1
Backing the champions in a game where nothing is on the line may also seem controversial, but Coventry are a big price and have looked even better since securing their spot in the Premier League.
Frank Lampard’s men have scored eight goals in their last two matches, while Watford have lost four in a row and are down in 16th. Good price for another Coventry win.
Norwich (A) to beat Hull @ 11/4
Hull have everything to play for, with a play-off spot up for grabs if they can beat Norwich at home. However, the Tigers have been dreadful lately, losing grip of a top-six spot with no wins in their last six.
Norwich have lost one of their last seven, and might just flourish up against a tetchy home crowd. Hull also may throw players forward late on, which could open the game up for Philippe Clement’s fantastic attackers.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Swansea (H) to beat Charlton @ 4/5
Swansea have been good under Vitor Matos on the whole. They tend to only be beaten by the top eight, last losing to Stoke in December outside those big boys, and as a result, they should end the season strongly.
Charlton have been poor over the last couple of months but got over the line with a win over Hull. Happy to back the hosts in this dead rubber, as Zan Vipotnik tries to wrap up the Golden Boot.
Luton (A) to beat Bolton @ 6/4
Luton have been flying recently and still have a chance of breaking into the play-offs. They sit one point behind sixth-placed Stevenage, and three points off both Stockport and Bradford, so a victory here could give them enough points to overhaul at least one of those teams.
Jack Wilshere has overseen eight wins and two draws in Luton’s last 10, including the Vertu Trophy final win over Stockport. They will be tough to stop if they make it into the play-offs and I’m backing them to beat a Bolton side that have won one in five with their play-off spot already secured.
They could meet again in the play-offs, but I’ll back the Hatters in this one.
