Newcastle vs Chelsea Prediction: Blues to toil on Tyneside again

After defeat in the Tyne-Wear derby last weekend, Newcastle United will be desperate to make amends in front of their own supporters this Saturday (12:30 GMT, TNT Sports 1) at St. James' Park, where they entertain Chelsea, who got back on track last time out with a 2-0 victory over Everton.

Team News

Tino Livramento (knee) has been ruled out of a reunion with his former side on Saturday, but another ex-Chelsea man, Lewis Hall, could be available after suffering fatigue in his hamstring during last Sunday's 1-0 loss to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.

Kieran Trippier (hamstring), William Osula (ankle), Sven Botman (back), Dan Burn (chest), Nick Pope (muscle) and Emil Krafth (knee) could all miss out, though.

As for Chelsea, Liam Delap (shoulder) and Estevao (muscle) are closing in on returns, but Saturday's game comes too soon for the pair.

Romeo Lavia, Dario Essugo (both thigh) and Levi Colwill (knee) remain sidelined, too.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is averaging 1.6 fouls and 1.9 tackles per game in this season's Premier League.

The 28-year-old has recorded 2+ fouls and 2+ tackles in seven of his 15 top-flight appearances (14 starts), and two of those games came at home to Liverpool and Manchester City, two members of last season's top five, which also featured Chelsea.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, meanwhile, is averaging one foul and 1.6 tackles per game in the 2025/26 Premier League.

The 24-year-old has fouled and tackled twice in the same game on two separate occasions this season, and with Bruno Guimaraes in the opposition's midfield, I can see the Argentine crunching into the challenges on Tyneside.

Newcastle (12th) may be in the bottom half of the Premier League, six points behind Chelsea (fourth), but they're sixth in the home table, having won five of their eight games at St. James' (D1, L2). Only reigning Premier League champions Liverpool (2-3) and current leaders Arsenal (1-2), who both required injury-time winners, have been able to claim all three points on Tyneside this term.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has a 100% record against Chelsea at St. James', winning all four games by an aggregate of 9-1.

Chelsea have toiled on Tyneside in the past few seasons, and while only Crystal Palace (16) have collected more points on their travels than the Blues (14) in 2025/26, they haven't impressed away from home recently.

Enzo Maresca's side failed to win three consecutive away games at the start of December, losing at Leeds United (1-0) and drawing at AFC Bournemouth (0-0) in the Premier League before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Atalanta in the Uefa Champions League.

They got back on track with a 3-1 Carabao Cup success at Cardiff City on Tuesday, but a win against a third-tier club means little ahead of a trip to one of the most hostile grounds in England.

The hosts owe their supporters a result after last weekend's loss at the Stadium of Light, and I think the likes of Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes and Nick Woltemade can do damage against Chelsea.
