A profitable day on Wednesday thanks to a 11/2 winner in the opener at Delaware Park leads us into Thursday’s US Horse Racing column, with us once again focusing on the Extra Place Races and horses only outside of the top three in the betting according to the Morning Line…

US Racing Tips – Thursday 20 July, 2023

  • Back W W Springtime e/w in the 18:00 at Delaware Park at SP
  • Back Saratoga Flash e/w in the 22:44 at Saratoga at SP
  • Back Win Over Wyatt e/w in the 01:37 at Canterbury Park at SP

Well, we had that lovely winner yesterday up in Delaware, so why not go back there looking to repeat and I fancy the chances of W W Springtime in the 18:00 sneaking into the top three. This seven-year-old had a poor run last time out, his worst speed figure since last November but the feeling is that it was an anomaly. This is a pretty high-class field for a small Claiming race but he has every chance of hitting the board.

It is Opening Day at Saratoga and we are paying out four places instead of three in the 22:44. Plenty of top quality horses have been entered unsurprisingly given the strong purse but I’m taking a punt on Saratoga Flash, a Saffie Joseph Jr. trained five-year-old who has had a very impressive run in the Gulfstream Park winter/spring meet. Two wins and twice placed second. Lots to like about the horse who may not even go off in the top six in the betting.

Only three selections today as not much else was grabbing my fancy but I do think this final pick is a good one. The ever improving Win Over Wyatt broke his maiden last time out and took a big step forward and takes on six others in the 01:37 at Canterbury Park. The reason he is such a big price on the Morning Line may well have to do with the race being at six furlongs whereas this three-year-old looks better going a bit further but in a low-quality field, should be a very decent price to place in the top three.

*Betfred have nine races from the US/Canada with Extra Places available this evening, you can check them all out via the Extra Places link on the right-hand column (desktop) or below (mobile).
