If you are a fan of goals then the right place for you to travel to on Saturday afternoon may well be the Racecourse Ground, where two of the top scorers in the Football League play one another.

We preview the match and pick out a bet or two that might be of interest…

Wrexham vs Crewe Betting Tips:

  • Back Paul Mullin to score anytime @ 9/10
  • Back over 3.5 Goals @ 11/10

These two sides aren’t just entertainers but they are also both flying-high in the League Two table. To those who haven’t been paying attention, it might be a bit of a surprise to see that it is the visitors who are actually one point and one place better off in the standing. Crewe go into the game in sixth, whilst Wrexham are seventh.

If there is one name that casual fans may well have heard of in the home side, then it is striker Paul Mullin. The 28 year-old scored bundles of goals down in the National League and was expected to be among the top scorers in the division, before his season was delayed due to a collapsed lung suffered in a preseason game, against Manchester United over in the States.

Happily, the former Everton and Liverpool academy player is back to full fitness and made his return in a substitute appearance three weeks ago, against Doncaster Rovers.

What might be a slight surprise, is that even with two starts under his belt, he is yet to find the back of the net this season but form is temporary and class is permanent. I fully expect that to change in the very near future.

In his absence, the goals have been shared around but it has been Elliot Lee who has shouldered the bulk of the load, with the midfielder having scored six times already. Not bad going for a player whose previous best output for a season was 15 in 51 last time around. He’s already bagged six in just ten games.

Steven Fletcher joined on a free transfer but has yet to start a game, as he looks to get up to full fitness. On paper, a partnership of the former Scottish international with Paul Mullin, would be extremely formidable at this level and this may well be the perfect opportunity to unleash that duo, on the back of three appearances from the bench.

Last time out, it was bad Wrexham and we have seen that on more than a couple of occasions so far this campaign. Anytime you see a genuine promotion contender get walloped 5-0, you sit up and take notice. That was the third time already in just nine league games, that they’ve shipped five.

As for Crewe, their defensive record isn’t great but it has been better than Wrexham’s. They will be boosted by the expected return of Connor O’Riordan to the backline following a slight calf injury that saw him miss out in the win over Colchester United last weekend.

Another player with a calf problem won’t be so fortunate, however, with Conor Thomas not expected to be available for another couple of weeks.

Wrexham projected starting lineup:

Howard, Hayden, Tozer, Boyle; Barnett, Young, O’Connor, Lee, McClean; Mullin, Fletcher

Crewe Alexandra projected starting lineup:

Davies, Adebisi, Offord, Demetriou, O’Riordan, Powell, Tabiner, White, Tracey, Long, Baker-Richards

Match Odds:

Wrexham go into this game as the 4/11 favourites with us at Betfred, with the draw priced up at 18/5 and the away win a 11/2 shot. Over 2.5 Goals is a 4/9 play, with the BTTS available to back at 8/13. Over 3.5 at 11/10 must be more than tempting considering both teams recent records, both in front of goal and at the back.

Paul Mullin (9/10) and Steven Fletcher (Evens) top the anytime scorer market, with Eliott Lee at 11/8, considerably shorter than he was earlier in the season for home games!

2-0 is the shortest-price in the Correct Score market, with both 1-0 and 2-1 available to back at 15/2. I’m expecting more goals however, so scores like 3-1 (9/1), 2-2 (14/1) or 3-2 (16/1) feel more enticing.

Bet 1: Paul Mullin to score anytime @ 9/10

At some point this mini-drought will be over and what better time, than at home against a team who themselves have conceded multiple goals in four of their nine games so far this season.

Mullin is just too good to keep away from the scoresheet long-term and his form and fitness should slowly be coming back, after that injury suffered across the pond.

Bet 2: Over 3.5 Goals @ 11/10

Both teams have statistically been involved in games with plenty of goals. Wrexham have a nice even record with 20 goals scored and the same number being conceded. Crewe have plundered 21 themselves, whilst shipping in 14. Therefore, the home side are averaging more than four goals in total per game, with the visitors just a smidgen under that number, at 3.87 per 90 minutes.

All the statistics suggest this should be a bit of a goal-fest and getting odds against on seeing the net bulge at least four times feel like a good play.

It should be noted that I’ve included Wrexham vs Crewe Alexandra in both my over 2.5 tips column for this weekend and my Saturday BTTS accumulator, so having done all that, this will probably end 0-0 and I’ll look like a fool but all the stats scream goals.
