Sabah vs KuPS Prediction: Finns unlikely to flounder in Baku battle

Just eight years after being founded, Sabah Baku have already dethroned Qarabag at the Azerbaijan Premier League summit and completed a league-and-cup double, so this is clearly a team on a mission. 

The Owls showed great quality to snap Qarabag's four-season stranglehold on the Azerbaijani title and while a Champions League triumph is almost certainly beyond them, they are an ambitious side who would love to make the league phase. 

Standing in their way, however, is a KuPS side who enjoyed some solid Conference League results last season and may have enough to trouble their hosts in the first leg of this Champions League qualifying second-round tie.

Sabah centre-back Steve Solvet is back from suspension but doubts continue to surround Khayal Aliyev, who missed both legs of the previous qualifying round against The New Saints with a hamstring injury.

Samuel Pasanen and Jerry Voutilainen are long-term absentees for KuPS but Joslyn Luyeye-Lutumba is finally back from a European suspension which he earned over five months ago.

Sabah are 8/13 favourites to win on the night, although they look a touch short. The draw is 3/1 while KuPS are 7/2.

The pair look pretty well matched so it is no surprise to see both teams to score at just 4/7. Over 2.5 goals is also short at 8/15.

KuPS or draw double chance @ 6/5

Having won the first leg of their first-round tie 2-0, KuPS looked to be cruising into the second round of Champions League qualifying. A fired-up Vardar gave them a real scare in Kuopio, though, forcing extra-time thanks to a late penalty.

KuPS dusted themselves down to win 5-4 on aggregate and the return of Luyeye-Lutumba means their already potent frontline has received a further boost, with the 23-year-old joining experienced forward Gustav Engvall and the 2026 Veikkausliiga's joint-highest goalscorer, Jaime Moreno, in a deadly attack.

Sabah are new to this stage and while they swept aside The New Saints with relative ease, winning 4-1 on aggregate, this tie is likely to be far more difficult.

Reigning champions KuPS again sit top of the Finnish top flight, losing just one of their 16 games, and their 2025-26 Conference League campaign included a 3-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava and an impressive 2-2 draw with eventual winners Crystal Palace.

Expect the visitors to use all their nous and upset their hosts in Baku.

Over 9.5 corners @ 5/6

While KuPS' experience and form gives them the nod, an end-to-end match is likely at the Alinja Arena, where two well-matched teams should rack up plenty of shots and, as a result, corners.

KuPS earned a huge 16 corners in their two legs against Vardar while Sabah managed only two fewer in a pair of matches with TNS, so siding with the flag-kick count hitting double figures should prove a profitable play.
