Both Teams to Score - Yes

It's difficult to assess teams that play on different continents and compare records, but Dortmund's defence would worry me against any opposition, really, not least against a side that has scored in their last seven games and arrives to this tournament in a confident mood after six matches unbeaten, the last four of which they have won.

Fluminense have scored 2+ goals in their last four outings and seven of their last nine, and only leaders Flamengo (24), Cruzeiro and Mirassol (both 17) have bettered their tally of 15 in Brazil's Serie A so far this season.

Meanwhile, only five sides in the 32-team Copa Sudamericana group phase have struck more times than Fluminense (11) in their six Group F games as they finished top.

Today's Football Fixtures

Dortmund had few problems in finding the net themselves in the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign, with only runaway champions Bayern Munich (99) and runners-up Bayer Leverkusen (72) netting more times than BVB (71), while in the league phase of the 2024/25 Uefa Champions League, only Barcelona (28) outscored the Germans (22), who subsequently struck nine times in the knockouts, including three in one game against the Spanish giants.

Niko Kovac's charges ended the regular season by scoring 2+ goals in their last seven matches (3+ in the final six) but kept just two clean sheets in that run, and their Bundesliga BTTS success rate for the campaign was 68% - the joint-third-highest in the division.

I'm confident we can see both teams on the scoresheet on Tuesday.

Fluminense Club World Cup Preview

Marcel Sabitzer (DOR) Total Shots 1+

This is just a small selection to nudge the odds up a little, but it's one I'm highly confident in.

Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer shot 21 times in 26 Bundesliga appearances (21 starts) this season, averaging 0.8 per game (1.2 per 90 minutes), and unleashed 16 efforts in 11 Champions League outings (10 starts), averaging 1.5 per game.

The 31-year-old suffered an injury in mid-March that kept him out for a couple of months, but in his first start back, the final-day 3-0 victory over Holstein Kiel, he recorded four attempts at goal, the second of which went in.

Sabitzer then went on international duty with Austria, playing the entirety of their wins against Romania (2-1) and San Marino (0-4). He scored with the last of his five efforts against the Tricolorii before trying his luck the same number of times against La Serenissima, but failing to add to his tally in 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying.

Fluminense vs Borussia Dortmund Stats

  • Both teams have scored in five of Dortmund's last seven matches
  • Marcel Sabitzer (DOR) averaged 1.5 shots per game in 24/25 UCL
  • Ramy Bensebaini (DOR) was booked four times in 12 UCL apps (eight starts) this term

Jhon Arias (FLU) Total Shots 2+

I picked out Colombian international Jhon Arias as the player to watch in my Fluminense Club World Cup preview, showing more love for the creative side of his game, but there are reasons to believe that he will register a couple of shots in Tuesday's contest.

The 27-year-old is averaging 1.4 shots per game in this season's Serie A and two per game in the Copa Sudamericana group stage, while he ended the Carioca campaign with an average of 1.9 per game.

Granted, his numbers were lower for Colombia at last summer's Copa America in the USA (1.2 p/g) and the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualification campaign (0.8 p/g), but in Dortmund, he'll face a side that concede their fair share of chances. Furthermore, Arias is likely to play the full game in East Rutherford, having only been substituted once in the league this season - and that was in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time.

In Flu's previous Club World Cup appearance, in 2023, Arias shot four times in the 2-0 semi-final success against Al Ahly, scoring with his final effort, before recording one attempt in the 4-0 final defeat to Manchester City.

Player Shown Any Card - Ramy Bensebaini (DOR)

Talking of Arias, I'm expecting him to play a big part in the fourth leg of this Bet Builder, which requires Dortmund's Ramy Bensebaini to receive a card of any colour at MetLife Stadium.

The 30-year-old is set to line up on the left-hand side of a back three, and that position is likely to see him come up against Arias, who is generally deployed on the right-hand side of Flu's forward line.

Arias has been fouled, on average, 2.9 times per game in this season's Serie A, and 2.3 times per game in the Copa Sudamericana.

Bensebaini, meanwhile, averaged 0.9 fouls per game in the 2024/25 Bundesliga, picking up six yellow cards for his indiscretions. Meanwhile, in the Champions League, he averaged 1.3 fouls per game and was booked four times, despite just eight of his 12 appearances coming as a starter.

The Algeria international was also carded for his country exactly a week ago, in a 4-3 friendly defeat to Sweden. He committed four fouls in that match, two more than his club teammate Daniel Svensson, who was also booked in Solna. Funnily enough, using similar logic, my colleague Simon Lillibury has tipped a card in his Fluminense v Dortmund preview for Svensson, who is set to play as the left wing-back against Flu.

Bensebaini and Svensson are both solid shouts to go into the referee's notebook in East Rutherford, but it's the former I'm backing given his stronger record.
