Club World Cup Team Betting Predictions: Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund had a disappointing season by their standards in 2024/25. They narrowly scraped a place in next year's Uefa Champions League by finishing fourth in the Bundesliga while they crashed out of the UCL at the quarter-finals stage and in the second round for the DFB-Pokal.

The Black and Yellows will spend their summer competing in the Fifa Club World Cup, though, having gained a spot in the 32-team tournament for their recent campaigns in Europe, particularly their run to the Champions League final in 2023/24. Group F: Borussia Dortmund, Fluminense, Mamelodi Sundowns, Ulsan HD

Fixtures: Fluminense vs Borussia Dortmund (17:00 BST, June 17), Mamelodi Sundowns vs Borussia Dortmund (17:00 BST, June 21), Borussia Dortmund vs Ulsan HD (20:00 BST, June 25).

After a disappointing season, Dortmund have the chance to end 2024/25 on a high on the world stage as they head to the United States of America for the Club World Cup in its new format.

Niko Kovac's side are a work in progress as they are not quite at the level that they want to be. However, the Black and Yellows have a strong group built for tournament football as their run to the 2024 Champions League final highlights.

They will take a look at their opponents in Group F and will fancy their chances to reach the knockout stage at the very least. From there it will be a case of who can remain consistent and who's looking sharpest, as this after all comes after a gruelling campaign so tired legs are to be expected.

Club World Cup 2025 Odds

Dortmund have some talented individuals within their ranks who can play a big role in this tournament. You look at the likes of Karim Adeyemi, Jamie Gittens, Pascal Groß as some of the notable figures who can inspire BVB in the USA this summer, and each of them have the quality to make this a fruitful trip for the Black and Yellows.

Going forward isn't a problem for them, having scored the third-highest amount of goals (71) in the Bundesliga this term, it's their defensive concerns that look to be their biggest problem.

The defence is the area that looks like it will need addressing the most this summer but for now Kovac will proceed with what he's got, but he may focus on tightening things up ahead of their American journey.

They are quite clearly the best team in their group on paper and they may get a favourable round of 16 draw against River Plate, so Dortmund might just surprise a few people this summer.

Player to watch: Serhou Guirassy

Dortmund have several attacking stars who could have been picked as their player to watch but for me no one stands above Serhou Guirassy. After transferring from VfB Stuttgart last summer, the striker has lived up to the billing in a Dortmund shirt, having enjoyed a great individual debut campaign at Signal Iduna Park.

The 29-year-old netted 34 goals across all competitions this term, with 21 coming in the league. Only Bayern Munich's Harry Kane (26) scored more than the Guinea international, highlighting just how good he has been this year.

He has shown his talent to find the net from a variety of situations and he is a potent finisher and one you cannot overlook as a contender for the Golden Boot in this tournament.

Guirassy is Dortmund's focal point who can hold the ball up well, while bringing others into play. He is going to be key for the German side in the USA, and his contributions have the potential to propel his team far.

Borussia Dortmund to reach the quarter-finals @ 6/4

It feels like we should already consider Dortmund as qualified for the knockout stage as they have been handed a very favourable group to get out of, and they should be able to win it fairly comfortably.

Should they win, they may be presented with Argentine side River Plate in the round of 16. Dortmund may face a few obstacles in such a fixture but I would still think that their quality will be able to shine through and send them through to the quarter-finals.

This is where it looks to get tricky for BVB. Progression to the last-eight would set them up for a potential meeting with either Real Madrid, Manchester City or Juventus, and that would be a very difficult fixture to navigate their way through.

Realistically, I believe this is where I would say Dortmund's Club World Cup journey will come to an end.
