Switzerland vs Colombia Prediction: Los Cafeteros backed to progress

Colombia got past Ghana in their last-32 clash, while Switzerland made light work of Algeria to reach this stage. The pair meet in Vancouver on Tuesday (1pm local, 9pm ITV1), for a place in the quarter-finals.

Team News

Switzerland’s Michel Aebischer is a doubt for this one as he tries to recover from a muscle injury, while Stuttgart centre-back Luca Jaquez is following a similar recovery plan. Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler should start in midfield with Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi at the heart of the defence. 

Colombia have been dealt a blow as forward Jhon Cordoba pulled his hamstring against Ghana and will miss the rest of the tournament. Luis Suarez will start in his place, alongside Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez in the final third.

Switzerland are priced at 21/10 to win this game, while Colombia are the 6/5 favourites to get the job done in 90 minutes. A draw which would force extra-time is 11/5, over 2.5 goals is 5/4 and you can find plenty of Price Boosts via the link above. 

Colombia to win the tie @ 8/13

I’m really bullish about Colombia at this World Cup and with their pathway, I think they are a great shout to reach the semi-finals. They are undefeated at the tournament so far, only drawing with Portugal in their final group game when a point was enough to top the group.

They should have won that game as well, but this is a Colombia outfit backed by a big following, with quality in all areas of the pitch. I’m not convinced by Suarez up front and Cordoba is a big loss, but the likes of Luis Diaz and Daniel Munoz should be able to cause Switzerland serious problems.

Switzerland came through a very easy group, while Algeria were poor against them in the last 32, and they haven’t had to travel at all which is a bonus. However, Colombia are on another level and should be able to progress to the quarter-finals.

Price Boost - Colombia to win, Luis Diaz to score and 3+ goals @ 6/1

I’ll also consider this Price Boost for tonight’s clash. I think Colombia will get the job done in 90 minutes for the reasons mentioned above, while I also think Luis Diaz is the best pick to score. He’s only scored once at this tournament but had two goals disallowed against DR Congo and had a massive five shots in total against Ghana. 

I’m backing him to find the net, while I also think this could be a surprisingly high-scoring affair. Switzerland have seen over 3+ goals in two of their four World Cup matches so far, and the knockout element means both teams will have to go for it should they concede first. A decent price at 6/1.
