Coventry vs Portsmouth Prediction: Can Pompey continue epic run of form?

Coventry City celebrated a return to the Premier League on Friday night after securing the point they needed at Blackburn thanks to Bobby Thomas’ late equaliser. After 25 years away, the Sky Blues will be in the top flight once again, but now they need to go and secure the Championship title. 

Three points against Portsmouth on Tuesday night (19:45 BST, Sky Sports+) will do that, and below you can find my Coventry vs Portsmouth predictions. 

Team News

After quite the party on Friday night, EFL Championship manager of the season Frank Lampard will want his side to get over the line in terms of securing the title on Tuesday. He switched to a back three to try and deal with Blackburn’s threats but that didn’t work, so expect the 4-2-3-1 system to return for this one. 

That means Haji Wright should return in place of Ellis Simms up front, with Romain Esse likely to be given a start on the right wing with Tatsuhiro Sakamoto out injured. Liam Kitching may keep his place in defence alongside goalscoring hero Thomas, with Joel Latibeaudiere likely to make way for the extra attacker.

Portsmouth have now won three games in a row without conceding, and John Mousinho is unlikely to tinker too much with his successful formula. Keshi Anderson was taken off early on with an issue and may miss out, so expect Adrian Segecic to start in his place having bagged his third assist in three matches. 

Terry Devlin was also taken off early with an injury, but his replacement Ibane Bowat scored the only goal of the game and will be full of confidence should he be handed another start at right-back.

Coventry are the favourites here, priced at 8/13 to take the win. That gives them an implied win probability of 62%, while a Pompey win is 4/1 and a draw is 3/1. 

BTTS is 5/6, over 2.5 goals is 4/5 and Wright is the favourite to score first at 4/1.

Coventry have drawn their last three games in a row and there is no doubt that performances have dropped off as the finish line moved closer to view. Now the Sky Blues have broken through that barrier, and certainly enjoyed a special night on Friday, it will be interesting to see how they kick on. 

They have the title in their sights, but to be honest with Ipswich dropping points that seems to be when not if the Sky Blues will lift the trophy. Portsmouth meanwhile look all but safe now after a remarkable week that has seen them win three games in a row without conceding. 

Promotion contenders Middlesbrough and Ipswich have already fallen to this mighty Pompey outfit, but I think they will hold Coventry to a point, and leave the title celebrations on pause at the CBS Arena. 

Marlon Pack to get booked @ 7/4

Marlon Pack has brought experience and industry to Portsmouth’s midfield over the past three weeks and his competitive nature has certainly been a key reason why Pompey have managed to stay up this term. 

The away side are going to have to be well-organised to stop the league’s top scorers, and a few tactical fouls might be necessary. Pack has picked up 10 yellows this term, with four of those coming in his last five Championship appearances. I’m backing that run to continue at the CBS.
