Under 3.5 Goals Meaning & Betting Strategy

As part of Betfred’s online offering we are running several educational pieces discussing the different areas of betting, to inform our readers about different markets or bet types.
For those of you new to the betting world and have a passion for football, you may have heard or come across the term Under 3.5 goals before. Don't fret if you are unsure what it means because we at Betfred Insights Education have put together this explainer article to present all the information you need.
What is Under 3.5 goals betting?
To put it simply, this market is used when you think there will be fewer than four goals scored in a football match. This covers both teams in the contest, so you will be hoping for games that feature zero, one, two or three goals with results such as 0-0, 1-1, 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 and 3-0.
What are the advantages/strategy for Under 3.5 Goals betting?
The main advantage of under 3.5 goals betting is that it is a lower risk than betting on a match result as it has a higher statistical probability. You only require the goal threshold to be met rather than focusing on the outcome of the contest, which in most cases makes watching a game more enjoyable.
It is also considered easier to bet on than matches because of the statistical analysis to help you with selections. One avenue of research is goalscoring form. If a team has been involved in a lot of high-scoring games in recent fixtures, it's best to steer away from them.
But if there is another team who have been involved in games in which goals have been hard to come by, this market becomes very attractive for their next contest. Recent form is one thing, but it also worth checking the numbers across the current season in the particular league/competition you are looking at.
Under 3.5 goals is also very common in professional football. For example, the latest Premier League campaign saw 65.79% (250/380) of matches produce fewer than four goals - so it's a very attractive market to bet on if you are an avid follower of England's top flight.
For strategy it is worth doing your research on both teams. Going back to my earlier point, it's worth checking recent results and the figures throughout the season.
Home and away form is always worth taking into account as a team may be really prolific in front of goal when playing at home, but the goals may be hard to come by on their travels.
Team news is something to consider as well. If a club is missing their top scorer who has scored a high percentage of their goals (for example Liam Delap scored 33.33% of Ipswich Town's league total in 2024/25) is injured, the probability of their next match featuring four or more goals will decrease.
The weather forecast is also worth taking note of as rainfall can lead to very slippy surfaces which in turn can lead to more cautious approaches from teams, leading to a shortage of attacking chances.
Prices for this market can vary depending on what game it is and who the opponents are, but punters also like to combine multiple selections to build an accumulator.
