As part of Betfred’s online offering we are running several educational pieces discussing the different areas of betting, to inform our readers about different markets or bet types.

For those of you new to the betting world and who have a particular interest in football, you may have heard or come across the term Under 1.5 goals before. Don't worry if you are not familiar with this term or as we at Betfred Insights Education have put together this explainer to give you the best understanding of what it means and how it is used as a market.

What is Under 1.5 goals betting?

This is a simple market to understand when put simply. It means you are predicting a football match will feature fewer than two goals. So for your bet to be classed as a winner, your game can have no more than one goal. So the two scorelines you are hoping for are a 0-0 or a 1-0.

What are the advantages/strategy for Under 1.5 Goals betting?

The biggest draw of this market is that it is a lower risk than betting on a match result because of the statistical probability. You only require the goal threshold to be met rather than focusing on the outcome of the contest - which in many cases allows punters to enjoy the games they are watching more.

However, this is considered tougher than betting on similar thresholds such as under 2.5 or over 2.5 goals because low-scoring games are not as common as you would think. In the latest Premier League season, only 18.68% (71/380) of the games played featured one goal or fewer.

Statistical analysis is helpful when looking at this market though to help inform betting decisions. Punters are looking for teams who either boast a very good defensive record, or who really struggle to score goals. Season stats and recent form are both good guides for research.

Home and away form is another key factor worth looking at as part of your under 1.5 goals research. Some teams will make their home stadium a fortress and may boast a strong defensive record, while they might be very easy to score against when they are on their travels.

Team news is something to consider as well. If a team is missing their first-choice goalkeeper, who perhaps ranks highly for saves, clean sheets or goals prevented, under 1.5 goals may not be as enticing with an understudy between the sticks.

Other things to think about include the weather forecast, rain can make pitches very slippy which can lead to teams playing more cautiously, potentially leading to a limited amount of chances on goal. This may then increase the chances of a low-scoring game.

Prices tend to be higher than some of the other goal threshold markets so there is better value in single bets, but punters will still be drawn into using some to build an accumulator.
