Newcastle vs Tottenham Prediction: Can Spurs bag away win?

The Premier League returns on Saturday as Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur in the early kick-off, live on TNT Sports at 12:30. With Tottenham tied on points with Aston Villa in the battle for fourth position, and with a healthy lead on Manchester United, Spurs will want to make sure they secure a top-four finish, which would ensure they don’t need to worry about any of the coefficient confusion.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have returned to form, are unbeaten in their last three and are hunting down United and a Europa League qualification spot. This is a big game for next season’s continental ambitions, and so here is my Newcastle vs Tottenham prediction.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Tips

  • BTTS and Spurs to win @ 9/4
  • Alexander Isak and Son Heung-min to score @ 10/3

Team News

With no European football for either of these clubs at this stage of the season, both Ange Postecoglou and Eddie Howe have had time to assess their squads, after a midweek breather. However, Newcastle’s injuries don’t seem to be abating.

Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Miguel Almiron are all out with knee issues and Callum Wilson is still struggling with his chest problem. Nick Pope, Tino Livramento, Joelinton, Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Joe Willock also are likely to be absent - as Howe continues to make do with the players he has at his disposal.

Spurs have a far lighter injury list. Richarlison and Manor Solomon are out with knee injuries, and Ryan Sessegnon and Fraser Forster are out for the rest of the season. Aside from that quartet, it is a clean bill of health for the rest of the squad.

Match Odds

This is a tough one to call. Newcastle are priced at 7/4 to take all three points, while Spurs are available at 11/8. That gives the away side a win probability of 42%, while a draw can be backed at 11/4. If you fancy goals, BTTS is 1/3 and over 2.5 goals is 4/11

BTTS and Spurs to win @ 9/4

St James’ Park is a really tough place to go, with the hosts winning 10 of their 16 home matches this season. They’ve also beaten Fulham and West Ham recently, but I believe Spurs will be too strong for them. Just.

I simply cannot see past Newcastle’s horrendous injury list that has decimated their defence and weakened their midfield. They are still capable of scoring goals, with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon fit and firing, and both teams should find the net here.

58% of Newcastle’s games have ended BTTS, while that figure is a whopping 77% for Spurs. With both attacks more than capable of finding the net, BTTS should come in again. I’m backing the away side to come away from the north east with an important three points.

Alexander Isak and Son Heung-min to score @ 10/3

I think there will be plenty of goals at St James’ Park on Saturday, from both teams. The odds of 4/11 for there to be over 2.5 goals mean that the bookies feel the same way, but we can find a way to get far more value than that, by backing the two main goalscorers from either side to find the net.

Isak has been in simply sensational form of late, and has scored 15 goals in 23 Premier League appearances this season. He has also scored five in his last six, and when he is on the pitch, Newcastle are a far more impressive attacking side. Picking out a Spurs goalscorer is easy too, as Son is set to continue up front.

The South Korean has also scored 15 league goals this season, with three of those coming in his last six appearances. Against a weakened Geordie backline, he should be able to find the net again.
