Having made the semi-final in Beijing last time out, Qinwen Zheng is bidding to repeat the trick in Wuhan, but she faces a tough test against third seed Jasmine Paolini.

Zheng had to dig especially deep in her last-16 victory over Leylah Fernandez, coming from a set down to prevail, and she is unlikely to have things all her own way against Paolini.

That means the Chinese player has gone to a deciding set in three of her last five matches and that looks like the likely outcome against Paolini, who has finished runner-up at the French Open and Wimbledon this season.

When these two met in a clay-court final in Palermo in July, Zheng won 6-4 1-6 6-1 and going over the total games in what promises to be an epic could be the shrewd play.

Coco Gauff celebrated a welcome return to form with her title triumph in Beijing last week and the American ace will have high hopes of following up in Wuhan.

Gauff has made light work of Viktoriya Tomova (6-1 6-2) and Marta Kostyuk (6-4 6-1) on her way to the quarter-finals and she is unlikely to drop a set against Magda Linette, especially with her confidence now at a premium following an eight-match winning streak.
