Nathan cleary penrith panthers 2024

The rest of the NRL Premiership knew it was too good to be true when the Penrith Panthers had recorded just three wins in their first 11 games, and they now arrive at the Cbus Super Stadium to face Gold Coast Titans on Saturday (15:00 local, 06:00 BST) on the back of seven straight wins.

The four-time reigning champions are now in fifth and one of the clear favourites to qualify for the top-eight play-offs, and my Titans vs Panthers predictions, which follow below with latest team news and Betfred’s match odds, include an assumption that this dominant streak continues.

Titans vs Panthers Betting Tips

  • Panthers by 26-30 points @ 7/1
  • Panthers over 30.5 points @ 1/1

Titans vs Panthers Odds

This is a meeting between a club who have finished outside the bottom four only twice in nine seasons against a resurgent four-time defending Grand Final winner, so of course the Titans are 10/3 to win on Saturday.

Ivan Cleary’s Panthers are a skinny 2/9, implying an 81.8% probability of an away win. The draw is 22/1, so it’s in the handicap market that the value should be found.

The Panthers are giving up a 13.5-point start on the regular two-way handicap, with their price lengthening to 10/11 in return. In that same scenario, the Titans are 5/6.

Team News

Des Hasler has a few changes to make following a first win in five against the Warriors last week, with Chris Randall unavailable to the Titans due to concussion protocols. He’s replaced by Sam Verrills, who is back after the birth of his first child.

Sean Mullany is suspended, with Tom Weaver listed to play from the bench and Alofiana Khan-Pereira among the reserves.

There are fewer changes for Hasler’s opposite number to concern himself with, as Ivan Cleary makes just a single alteration.

Into the starting 13 comes Liam Martin after his return from wrist trouble last week as a substitute all went to plan. Isaiah Papali’i switches to the bench to make space.

Rugby League Odds

Panthers by 26-30 points @ 7/1

The champs are on quite the roll. They are on a winning run stretching seven games, their longest such streak in two years, and have conceded 10 or fewer points in each of their last four games – a stat they have not matched since March-April 2021.

It is fair, then, to suggest that they are as good right now as they have been at any stage during their incredible period of dominance, and in the last few weeks they have looked as silky as their old selves.

So I just don’t see a ragged Titans having any sort of answer to the Penrith attack. And with the 13+ winning margin coming in at odds-on, I’m going for a narrower range to seek out some value.

The Titans concede points but don’t score in massive amounts, while the Panthers know how to put a game to bed. With that in mind, I like the look of the five-score win at 7/1.

Panthers over 30.5 Points @ 1/1

Whatever Gold Coast are able to contribute, I just don’t see a scenario in which the champs don’t score plenty in this one.

Blaize Talagi and Nathan Cleary (when fit) are really starting to fire in the halves, while Dylan Edwards has rediscovered his best form with three tries in his last two appearances.

The outside backs are as dangerous as ever, they have great threat through the middle, and on the bench they have great talents who are thirsty to contribute. What Ivan Cleary has here is a perfect blend.

Whether that will bring them an until-recently improbable fifth straight title is still to be seen, but it should be more than enough to rack up six or more scores against the Titans and bring this 1/1 shot in.

Titans vs Panthers - Panthers Total Points 27.5-30.5 Over 30.5
