19:51 Sunland Park (Race 2) - M L's Sportscaster @ SP
A quartet of these ran in a similar event over course and distance on January 5. Holy Bullet (6) did the best of them, running a length second. He is a player here but the fourth Stand Up Guy (7) finished ahead of him at Zia Park in November. Splitting that pair last time was American Storm (1). He came back to his maiden winning form. There may be better to come from him racing in blinkers first time.
It is not easy for last time maiden winners to beat winners in an allowance event at first asking. M L's Sportscaster (3) may be capable of doing so. He more than confirmed his debut promise to graduate at Zia Park last month. The placed horses franked the form by running one-two in a maiden here next time. He showed speed last time but did sit just off the pace and run well on debut.
Stackers (2) is one for 28 lifetime with 10 placed efforts. He’s hard to endorse as a win candidate but is worth considering for the forecast. The six-year-old ran well in open company last time. Take out his last run when a non stayer, Sapello Riddler (4) has a chance. He cuts back to the distance he broke his maiden at.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
20:17 Sunland Park (Race 3) - Sheza Hailstorm @ SP
Many chances here. There will likely be some hard luck stories over an abbreviated distance and a short run to the bend. The wide post is the biggest negative with Allabouttheimage (10). The former Illinois based mare ran a fine third on her local debut a fortnight ago. In contrast, No Regrets N Love (1) has a potentially fine draw. She has had some time away since a couple of nice efforts at Albuquerque in October. Alejandro Medellin is aboard. He gives everything a ride.
Sheza Hailstorm (5) and Artful Rose (4) come off good races at Zia Park. The first named gets a tepid vote here. She’s two from two at this peculiar distance. She worked nicely for her new trainer locally. Artful Rose (4) has not ran as fast but her trainer has been on fire. She gets a class test after beating New Mexico breds. The seven-year-old is speedy so cutting back to four-and-a-half furlongs may see her improve.
The Martin Valdez trained pair of Shame On Charlotte (7) and Street Mark (8) both run as if cutting back to today’s trip may see them run better. Likewise Snow Flurry (3). She has had excuses since a near six-length victory at Albuquerque in October. The seven-year-old could cause an upset.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
20:43 Sunland Park (Race 4) - Afjan @ SP
There is some solid local form on offer but the three shippers from out of state all look dangerous. A pair come in from Turf Paradise. Sir Bregovic (1) is a newly turned veteran who still retains plenty of ability. He’s been placed in two similar events in his last two starts.
However, slight preference is for Afjan (4). He’s ran well in back to back deep starter events in Arizona. They came over a mile but he has plenty of form over similar distances to today’s. He plots to get a nice trip with speed to chase down.
Red hot trainer Justin Evans is double-handed. Good Lovin (8) faced a simple task in a starter event on his local debut. He is dangerous if he makes the lead on his own. Winning rider Luis Valenzuela gets off him to partner Helicity (3). He comes out of much better races at Santa Anita. They were on the turf. His one run on dirt was a poor one. He has been working well (on dirt) since joining Evans. All of his runners for his owner have ran big so far at this meet. He is the runner to fear.
Cat Gamer (6) and Moonshine Mischief (5) are holding their form well. The first named didn’t seem to get home over an extended mile last time. Moonshine Mischief (5) has form at this level. He didn’t seem to quite stay the last time he raced over six-and-a-half furlongs.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
